Uncle Toni: "Rafa would have surpassed 17 Grand Slams already if he was right handed"

Toni Nadal was interviewed by Danish sports television today covered by Helle Smidstrup (26th June '14) and he talked about how it was a misconception that he knew that Nadal was right-handed from an early age and that he decided for Nadal to play left-handed due to 'getting an advantage over the field'.

Uncle Toni revealed that Rafa at age 3-4 when he was playing double-handed on both wings, he thought his swing from the left side looked more natural to him and combined with Rafa's left-footedness visible in his football playing, he naturally thought Nadal was a leftie and made Nadal play as a southpaw.

He then goes on to say it was a mistake on his part, as he later in life has become aware that all Nadal does with his left hand (at least that we know of ) is play tennis.

The preppy Uncle also tongue-in-cheek said that Rafa might already would have surpassed 17 Grand slams if he didn't make the mistake of making Nadal play with his non-preferred hand.

You know he's right. Even playing with his left-hand, the circuit can't keep up with him when he's healthy. Maybe men's tennis would have stopped being called a "competitive sport" if Rafa played with his preferred hand.

This was perhaps generous Toni's way of evening out the sport.

Playing with his left hand is exactly why he won 14 slams.

Mafioni trolling, as usual.

I read this and was thinking what the guy is dreaming bout, being lefty is his advantage over the field which is not so visible like against Federer - the same Nadal - physical beast at his peak playing his heavy topspin FH with right hand would have negative H2H with Roger - probably he still would be greatest clay-courter in this era but chances on faster surfaces vs top players would be lower and vs Roger much lower than as with left hand

Nadal's BH when given the chance, can really flatten it out with deep, penetrating precision which is all thanks to his right-hand which is his natural. However, I don't think he would have won more slams or rather he would win less slams if he was a righty because all the advantage he's got as a leftie is diminished. Federer would also have an easier time with Nadal.

A clear indicator that not only was that ugly man joking but stating the clear and down-right obvious, which is Nadal would not have been even half as much a genuine force in men's tennis, HAD HE played right handed.

You can instantly flip the Federer head to head around for a starters. Roger also would unquestionably have beaten him on the red-dirt a time or two at Roland Garros, particularly during Rafa's more tender years.

He unquestionably would never have been able to oust Roger at Wimbledon back in the 2008 final. Hell, who's to say he'd even have been in a position to face Federer in that final, considering how beatable he would have been to other players on grass, being right handed?

Nadal as a right-hander you feel would have dominated on clay still, but less so. As for hard-courts, possibly, but 3 grandslams on the surface? Just no. Grass? LOL! Would never flirt with getting out the group phase of the world tour finals indoors.

This is just being realistic. Toomany players have a good forehand and his entire game is to break down the backhand with his leftiness on court. Solid top 10er like Birdshit and Wonga had he been a righty and everybody that knows tennis, knows that. :)

I think he got it all wrong. What he did a long time ago was the perfect thing. Getting Rafa the racket and playing lefty.

Doubt it if he was a righty he would have as many as he has. But Toni is the only one who knows Rafa so, i dont know why this comment now.

I would like to know what Rafa thinks about it.
