Bad athlete, bad work ethic, lazy attitude, not a likeable guy on the court.

But still. I have been watching tennis since 2003 and Tomic is the most revolutional player have seen, apart from the usual suspects at the top. I remember watching him at the Australian Open in 2011, beating Lopez and beaten by Nadal. He strangely made Nadal look awkwardly out of balance for a set and a half, effortlessly.

Tomic's court sense is incredible, the way he can use the geometrics of the court is remarkable.

From a strictly technical point of view, he just did not work on his weaknesses (ROS, footwork, lack of offensive mindset) to improve as a player after the breakthrough year, and the tour kind of figured him out.

Do I think he is the best player of his generation? Of course not, but the raw talent he has surpasses even Dimitrov's or Tsitsipas'.

What are your thoughts?

i agree his talent is amazing, and i love talent always. but nowadays tennis is more about mindset and being athletic than finesse, skills and talent, sadly. You need to work your ass hard and sadly, i am starting to convince myself that Bernie is never going to put enough effort into it...

I think Fed back then said something like "not like we haven't seen a slice backhand before". :D But I agree, Tomic almost took Novak to five sets in that Wimbledon qf, and who knows what would've happened in that case, he certainly had the ability to make his opponents feel uneasy. The phrase "easy power" has become somewhat a cliche, but I'd say it applies well to him.

Unfortunately seems like everything went downhill from there, already the next year he was losing left and right and never felt like a threat to the top guys anymore. Not sure whether because he got figured out or because he bothered less and less (or both).

He was unique and interesting to watch but it became clear early on he’d never try hard enough to overcome his glaring weaknesses

He's second only to Kyrgios.

Two most talented players ever having a combined record of 3 slam QF-s appearances.

Not sure about that analysis. They are both talented but will never win big titles. I once thought Kyrgios might but I now rule that out. I respect not having a "nose to the grindstone" attitude and playing free. But that also means instability and the more disciplined players will eat you.

he obviously has talent for pron, tho.
Let's see... Tennis vs Porn
Tennis.
1) Working your tail off at practice and in the gym
2) Running yourself ragged in matches week after week
3) Non-stop travel, many times to places you don't want to go
4) Having to be careful about your diet, forgoing a lot of good food and drink

Porn
1) Having sex with hot young women
2) Eating and drinking whatever you want

Tough choice

Kyrgios is just a serve-bot, and even his dumb little tricks shots don't work anymore....
And he's lost 4 tiebreakers in a row to Nadal :) and tiebreakers are Nick's specialty....

Depends how you define "work". He still makes a good living entertaining the mob.
