I watched a little bit of the replay, just to try to get an idea of what happened. I may well have missed something, but it looked to me like a combination of Shimabukuro playing very well and being very solid, and Machac being off his game. In particular, Machac was quite passive, was mishitting a lot of BHs from the baseline (about 20 UE on that side), wasn't coming into the net much and didn't have his usual touch when he got there. He didn't look injured but he didn't seem particularly engaged and did look as if he was lacking energy or inner fire. He broke Shimabukuro once in the 2nd set (1/1 on BPs) but wasn't really there in any of the other return games as far as I could see; he was broken once in each set and fended off 10/12 BPs. The crowd were obviously behind Shimabukuro but were very polite about it, so I don't think that played a big role.
