SYDNEY, Australia (AP) -- Top-seeded Marat Safin withdrew from the Sydney International on Thursday because of a shoulder injury.
Safin, ranked No. 3 and a finalist at the last Australian Open, had an inflamed rotator cuff in his right shoulder. The 22-year-old Russian had played on the previous two days in Sydney and was due to face South Korea's Lee Hyung-taik later Thursday in a quarterfinal.
No further information was available on Safin's condition or his availability for the Australian Open, starting next Monday.
