Federer was the perfect player from 04-07. No one in the history of tennis achieved such level, effortlessly combing power and placement. Tennis commentators, Players, Nadal and even objective Nadal fans agree to this.

But this has been a curse for Federer. After 07, he was always looking to recapture his old form. There was nothing that he could improve on. And so he declined and declined.

Nadal on the other hand knew he had to improve day in and day out (you gotta give him huge credit here). He always improved. Just think of his FH topspin which used to land short. Now it lands very very deep causing trouble to almost all players on all surfaces.

Federer's 09 is highly underrated here.

1. He made all four Slam finals, won two of them and was dangerously close to winning other two.
2. Did the RG+Wimbly combo completed his CYGS.
3. 2 Masters titles, one of them was against Dull on clay.

And that's not all, the AO final and Wimbly Final was some of the most high quality tennis, likes of which we didn't see until 2011.

And as for Dull improving every day all day, we know what happened in 2011

After the horrible 08, Fed looked to capture his old form and he did in 09. And he choked USopen final. But from 2010 onwards, he couldn't capture his old form leading to huge decline.

roger in 2005 became the perfect player

the only perfect player we've ever had in the game

and he sustained it for a year

in 2007 you could tell that mentally he couldnt keep it up, physically in 07 he was fine, but the mental pressure to have the prefect game started to show cracks

in 2008 the mono finally slowed him down- a tad- any other player and you would have seen a drop off, but not roger- too good roger

2009 was the same as 2008 imo, just had a better draw for him

after ao 2010 roger dipped further

its very hard to maintain a perfect game for 7 days

you see player get hot and keep it for maybe a few tournies and lose it

roger kept it going for 2005-2006 season

best ever

Federer is old he couldnt keep it up physically, he is like 27 in 2009.

He is best in rallies if he try to run with the other player.

Truth is his game still can improve to get 20 slams.
