The Mark Verryth Cheering Thread!

Stats
Date Of Birth: 03/05/1991
Place Of Birth: Perth, WA
Place Of Residence: Melbourne, VIC
Height: 1.93m
Weight: 87kg
Current Junior Ranking: 38
Highest Junior Ranking: 23 (1st January, 2008)

Mark is a right handed, 16 year old originally from Perth, however he enjoyed a brief stint in the Cash-Hopper Tennis Academy in Queensland before permanently relocating to Melbourne. At 193cm, his serve is a huge weapon, as is his forehand, and at only 16 and still developing, these strengths are bound to get even stronger. His junior achievements include winning the 2007 Junior Davis Cup with Bernard Tomic, aswell as winning numerous Junior titles, including 2005 ITF's in France and Belgium, aswell as the 16's Australian Claycourts in 2006. He is currently ranked #38 on the Junior world rankings, making him the secondest highest Australian, after Tomic.

He has recently attempted to break onto the main tour, and is still attempting to win his first maindraw match although his efforts have been promising. In his first attempt, he qualifed for the maindraw in a $15K ITF event in Australia in late October, where he lost in the first round to Marinko Matesevic in two tight sets 7-6 6-3. In 2008, he was awarded a WC into another $15K event in Australia where he drew #1 seed Nathan Healey in the first round, where he lost in another tight two setter 6-4 6-4. His goals for the year include gaining an ATP point/ranking, while still cutting an imposing figure on the junior circuit.

I want it recorded for posterity that I came up with that nickname :)

Especially if any of the Channel 7 commentators start using it!

Mark is currently contesting French Open juniors, and just won the first set 7-5 in his first round match against the 11th seed Cedrik-Marcel Stebe of Germany. Hopefully he can close it out in 2 sets and make the second round.

He's been playing junior tournaments on the clay as a lead up and hasn't done well, losing all his clay leadups in the first round - including a loss to Novak Djokovic's brother Marko. He did, however, compete in a Futures event in Great Britain, where he won his first round of qualifying, but lost in the second round. So not really the ideal preparation, but we'll see how he goes.

Up 7-5, and serving first in the second :bounce:

Verryth def. (11) Stebe 7-6 6-4

Only got 45% of 1st serves in, and 8 DF's :help: 5 Aces, but still.. Hopefully he's firing better in R2.

R2: Krajinovic-Piskovic def. Verryth 6-2 6-4

Better serving with 63% of 1st Serves in, but it wasn't enough. However he's still in the doubles partnering Aussie Jared Easton. They play Siributwong/Cho in the 1st Round, the #8 seeds.

Baby Poo had a good start to his Wimbledon campaign overnight. Got through his first match easily to join Isabella, Johanna and Bernard in the second round.

Mark went out in R2 of the singles, losing to Ty Trombetta 7-6 6-3. Still in the doubles though..

It would been great for Mark to go a bit further in the singles to join Dane, Bernard and Andrew in the qtrs  oh well..

The footage of this is quite funny...pity they can't get his name right.

PERILS OF THE WIMBLEDON SPECTATOR
By Damon Wake, PA
Normally a spot of sunburn and the effects of too many strawberries are the
biggest perils facing Wimbledon spectators, but yesterday one woman discovered
that watching tennis can be a dangerous business.
Sitting in the front row of the stands on Court 3 to watch a boys' doubles
match, she was hit full in the face by the first serve of the match, hit by
17-year-old Australian Mark Verryn.
The woman, who has not been named, was taken away for treatment by St John
Ambulance volunteers, and was later spotted recovering by smoking a cigarette.
Mike Gibbons, from St John Ambulance, said the woman was shaken and bruised,
but after an icepack and a rest was well enough to continue watching the
tennis.
"It came as a bit of a shock to her, but it wasn't a big problem from her
point of view," he said.
"Smoking a cigarette wouldn't be a treatment we would recommend, but if she
felt comfortable doing that it shows she was all right."
