I noticed usually the managers aren't playing their tournaments, so maybe it's because it's better for management stuff.

Yes, you can play in a tournament you manage. You just have to get someone else to collect picks from your opponents so you don't see their picks before you make your own picks.

It is much easier, however, if you can avoid it so less coordination is needed.

I strongly advice not to play when there is possibility and same level tournament.
