Davis Cup edition: Marat rules

By Matthew Cronin
tennisreporters.net

1. Marat Safin:
Crunching Chela and then Nalbandian to clinch Russia's tie over Argentina when he knew that Kafelnikov wouldn't be able to play the fifth match was possibly the most clutch performance of his career.

2. Sebastien Grosjean: The Skateboard Kid outthinks and outruns Blake and Roddick and puts himself back on the map after a so-so year.

3. Yevgeny Kafelnikov: Does anyone play better in their home country than
Special K? I think not. Nearly killed himself against Argentina and now has a great shot of winning first Cup title.

4. Arnaud Clement: Spunky win over Roddick on the first day of Davis Cup
showed that he doesn't always choke at Roland Garros.

5. Roger Federer: Swiss wipes out Morocco single-handedly, not dropping a set in three matches.

6. Tim Henman: Bum shoulder and Rusedski-less for Davis Cup, Henman nails three wins for England in World Group qualifying over Thailand.

7. Xavier Malisse: Belgian survives tough Harare climate, taking out the Black brothers in Zimbabwe and leading his country back into the World Group.

8. Andrei Pavel: In the most difficult World Group qualifying tie, the Romanian downs Slovak Republic by scoring a singles win over Karol Kucera and teaming with Gabriel Trifu to beat Karol Beck/Dominik Hrbaty.

9. James Blake: Loss to Clement in D.C singles is tough to swallow, but played extremely well in winning the doubles with Todd Martin. Still, when is that big singles win going to happen?

10. Todd Martin: Who says that this old warrior has nothing left? Steady play in doubles helped give U.S. its only point. Should Patrick McEnroe have played him on Sunday in singles instead of Andy Roddick
