I stumbled across this article for women's tennis, listing the nations with the most champions in the Open Era.

Most of the Grand Slams have a Country Scoreboard which shows how all the countries ranked at the slam based on numbers of players (both men and women) and percentage of wins. This is a good way to get a cross section of the leading countries in tennis.

Serbia was #1 at the Australian Open 2012.
