Hewitt takes top seeding as Gasquet pulls from Adelaide

Adelaide, Australia - Number 21 Lleyton Hewitt will take the unaccustomed position of top seed at the Next Generation Hardcourts starting next week after the injury pullout of Richard Gasquet on Wednesday. Tournament officials at the event which is holding its last edition in the South Australian capital before being folded into a combined ATP-WTA tournament to be played in January 2009 in Brisbane, confirmed that number eight Gasquet will miss the Australian date.

The French tyro, who competed in the season-ending Masters Cup for the first time last month, will have to delay the start of his season due to a knee injury.

His status for the Australian Open starting January 14 is uncertain.

Gasquet is suffering from a knee injury.

"It obviously isn't nice to see Richard withdraw from the event," said co-director Peter Johnston said.

"As a sign of his class though, he has decided he will still come to Adelaide in the lead-up to the tournament for media opportunities.

"We wish him all the best for a speedy recovery and hope he will be back in time for the rest of the Australian summer. "

Former number one Hewitt, born in Adelaide, ruled the game in the early 1990s before going off the boil. He has not played since October due to injury problems.

Joining Hewitt in the field at Memorial Drive will be Frenchmen Paul-Henri Mathieu, former semi-finalist Sebastian Grosjean and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

Two-time Australian open doubles champion Michael Llodra of France moves into the main draw due to Gasquet's exit.

Hewitt vs the French and compatriot Guccione.
Prediction: The French will give a run for his money. After a few three setters may encounter his compatriot in later rounds. Guccione will be reminiscent of those times that led to the runner-up silver ware last year (vs Djockovic)and find his form. However, Hewitt will prevail and win Adelaide with his new attacking style. It's been a long time since Hewitt has been seeded for an ATP tournament. Hope he lives up to the seeding by adding some silverware to his collection whether its a runners-up or winners trophy.

I read somewhere this is Hewitt's last time to play at this event. I haven't been keeping up with his career or anything recently... is he retiring this year?

This is Adelaides final year as an ATP event;) - the tourney will be moving to Brisbane, if I'm not mistaken there will be an international event at the Memorial Drive from 09 onwards featuring Wilander, Safin and others... i think:confused:

For almost 1.5 year now, every time I place a bet on him, he loses, seriously
So after a few months I didn't dare to bet on him anymore for months, until he won a
few matches, so I tried, and he lost again, and again, and again...it's like a freak show
these jinxing powers of mine
