In the first all-Swiss final for 14 years on the ATP World Tour, Stanislas Wawrinka defeated Roger Federer 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-2 in the final of the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters. Wawrinka is the 59th different winner of an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament, breaking up the domination of the ‘Big Four’.

If i remember correctly, this one was not mendatory.. Lots of players missing.
It is no longer mandatory since 2009 since MS reform (Hamburg replaced by Madrid on clay and Madrid ind by Shanghaï).

Also this year the points are upgraded, GS 2000, MS 1000 etc)

MC, like Hamburg, was to be downgraded to ATP 500, but Nadal protests against it (and accord by Fed supports him).

So a compromise is found.

MC will not be a mandatory MS and will count as an ATP 500 substitute in the breakdown.

It is becoming difficult to find traces of this ATP reform today, I located the changes but not the date for final decision, which dates from October 2007 for the 2009 season

Hamburg, which filed anti-trust lawsuit against the ATP in a U.S. Federal District Court in April in an effort to preserve its current Masters Series status, has been reserved a "500" level week though its litigation against the ATP "is ongoing" the ATP told Tennis Week.

Monte-Carlo reached an out-of-court settlement in the tournament's anti-trust lawsuit against the ATP in July. Under terms of that agreement, Monte Carlo has dropped its lawsuit against the ATP and will retain its Masters Series status, but lose the player commitment requirement of other Masters Series events starting in 2009.

Federer was very close, Stan stayed with him in set 2 and eeked out the tiebreak before laying Federer flat.

Federer blew hot and cold with Stan in 2014.

With MC, by this victory, he gave the legitimacy to Stan of his Australian slam where he had beaten 2 big3, but the doubt with the mentioned injury of Nadal remained.

By consolidating this 3rd victory on a big3 (1st vs Fed like 1st vs Nadal in Melbourne too and .. last vs Djoko dates from .. Vienna 2006, 14 defeats since), he completes Stan's dubbing.

And Davis Cup campaign continued.

1/2 cry baby at the Masters is also fun.

He keeps enough tension (maybe even rage) on Stan to keep him focused, on the embers and determined for the Davis Cup final 5 days later. :)

Great job.

Davis Cup business is settled and Stan can return to the slam finals slam without any complex.

The Stanimal sure showed up in this match. Poor Federer.
Stan saving tennis and making sure Federer never won Monte Carlo. (y)
If Federer wanted to win MC he could do it. The main goal was to help Stan to get over this mental block he has against the top players.Federer knows Wawrinka better than anyone else. They have trained hundred of times for years.Do not listen what they talk in public!
Both Swiss guys in great form but both of them are at or over 30 and they can not play and win every tournament but they could be selective. Well we saw it at FO.

Federer knew very well where Stan' mentality was in DC in Geneva. Stan really needs to thank Federer for defeating Kukushkin
or DC tie would has been done for Swiss. Stan admitted he does not feel at one level with Federer beside him.It is very tough
for him, that people come to see Federer not him. Okay i am sure Federer could have won MC vs Stan, but knew that would kill him
Wawrinka did not play better than Tsonga vs Federer ,But Federer still remembered FO last year and up his game. Federer still has a lot of game for Stan.

😎 (y)

Conclusively,
masterclass
