The NYT had a good article today, imo it tells it as it is.

The conclusion is the most important here:

"Similar mass demonstrations dissipated last year without forcing concessions from Mr. Vucic.

“This situation is a bit different,” said Dr. Vasiljevic. “But we still need to have some clear political articulations, and a clear political narrative.”

While members of the "Women in Black" hold a silent vigil in the downtown Belgrade to commemorate the Srebrenica Massacre, a group of young men approach, chanting 'Ratko Mladic'. Judging by their appearances, doubt most of these kids were even born in 1995
Guess who will afterwards go in front of the parliament to "protest".

All violence these days here was started by the far right. Peaceful protesters are visibly separated from them. Even by simply sitting down.

This is a uniquely favorable moment for all kind of scum to come out.

Especially at this point in Serbia, we are in a tough position not just because of this fucking virus. Negotiations to have some lasting and sustainable deal about Kosovo are about to restart. Very favorable playing ground for people outside our region to meddle and destabilize the situation if they find it fit for whatever reasons.

Unfortunately, if additionally you have a good part of population prone to fake news, it is a recipe for disaster. The year ahead of us will be crucial. We will either pass this test as a nation, or get stuck in mud for decades to come.
