Guess he cannot fall out of the top 20 irrespective of his results for the rest of the year, by sheer virtue of Roger winning the U.S Open, eliminating another grand slam winner to cause Safin any problems. Check the ATP website.

Congrats Safin and hope you have a speedy recovery!

More information:

Marat Safin, 2005 Australian Open champion, will make his fourth appearance in five years at the Tennis Masters Cup

Safin, who captured his second career Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in January when he defeated Federer in the semifinals and Lleyton Hewitt in the final, first qualified for the Tennis Masters Cup in 2000. He reached the Tennis Masters Cup semifinals last year, when he and Federer played a riveting match that ended when Federer won a record-tying second-set tie-break 20-18.

Safin’s season to date has been hampered by a knee injury, forcing him to miss almost two months between Wimbledon and the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters in Cincinnati. Having played in only one hard court tournament leading up to the US Open, Safin’s injury also prevented him from playing in Flushing Meadows.

SAFIN SAYS: "I am looking forward to going back to Shanghai for the Tennis Masters Cup,” Safin said. “I played there in 2002 but was not so successful, so I want to do better this year. I know they have built a brand new stadium, which is very modern and impressive."

Of course he is looking forward- fast indoor courts just what the doctor ordered

This is his time of the season to shine assuming he is fully fit and recovered.

BTW, does anyone know what his condition is following his withdrawal from the Open?

RonE, I am not completely sure if it is fast indoor courts, although Safin sure can play on outdoors as well. I think the new Shanghai stadium can both be outdoor or indoors depending on the weather conditions.

Not read anything new on his condition after the Open other than the fact that he is not playing the Davis Cup. Maybe he is actually trying to deal with his injury more seriously now.

Could be. I just assumed it was indoors since that's the way it was in 2002. I had no idea they were building a new stadium. I am not much of an expert on local weather conditions during that time of year but I would think that during the winter it could get a bit cold over there so it would seem logical to make it an indoor court.

Let's hope so- I really couldn't understand his decision to play in Cincinnati going against medical advice

According to official news treatment was to last 5 weeks and if everything's ok Marat will play October, 3.

But I don't know how reliable are Marat's official news.

Shanghai! Bleh. Bring it back to Houston so I can have a slim shot at seeing him in person! Plus, can you imagine the quotes :p
Maybe they have their own version of Matress Mac to fill in the void :)
