Congrats to Russia for winning the Davis Cup.
Mikhail Youzhny comes back from down 2 sets to love and wins the decisive 5th match to give Russia the victory. As TheBoiledEgg put it, "Today, he became a man, a great man." This could be the jump-start that he needs to become a solid top-20 player.
Yevgeny Kafelnikov can now go out on a high note. He said he would retire if Russia won. He may now do just that. He has accomplished everything he ever wanted to do in tennis, including reaching #1, winning 2 slams, an Olympic gold medal and now the Davis Cup.
Marat Safin has been the star of the team, with a singles record of 6-1. 2002 was almost a year to forget for him until the last few weeks. He did not wins a title until the last Masters event in Paris. Then he went 0-3 at the Masters Cup. But now winning the Davis Cup has made it all worthwhile. This may be a sign of good things to come for 2003.
Congrats again!
