Fantastic match! Probably the most entertaining of 2019 for me. Really happy for Gael that he stuck it out and held his concentration, not necessarily throughout as there were some typical blips, but his final service game was very strong. Medvedev was also great - loads of epic rallies and some stunning shots from both players.

Wow, haven't seen the match but didn't expect this result. Good for Gael. Would love a Monfils - Wawrinka final.

It was an entertaining match. The first 3 games took nearly 20 minutes, at least 3 of the points I believe reached 25 shot rallies in them games alone, including one over 40 shots.

In the first set Monfils worked his way back from a break down but instantly got broken again and it was looking like his hard work was not going to pay off. It was however evident that Medvedev was seeming a bit more tired even in the first set and making more errors than usual.

Monfils raced away to a 3-0 lead in the second set, and he got pegged back but quickly restored his lead and won that set deservedly. There was a lot of nice quality from him in the second set, probably his best games came here.

The third set saw a reduced quality from both but was still engaging and unpredictable. Monfils once again started to let Medvedev back in, and looked in trouble for a few points as he tried to hold his serve at *3-4. Another impressive return game saw him break and then served it out.

Monfils did deserve his victory today, some of his returning was very impressive although he was struggling at time in his service games, making some weird shot selection (frustratingly poor drop shots at times). Medvedev on the other hand saw his 15 set winning streak and 8 match winning streak ended, after so many matches in 2 weeks there was a big chance it would catch up with him and it definitely seemed to be a factor.

Final #29 for Monfils. He has lost 21 finals so far and I don't think he is favourite tomorrow whoever he plays - but who knows... he could spring a surprise if he finds an extra 5-10% from this performance.

Nice match indeed. I saw the second and third sets. Lots of entertaining rallies. Funny to say though, but Monfils was the more mentally stable player here and won because of it.

Gael showed just how much more talented is than Medvedev, who is extremely overrated on MTF. Good win for Gael. He will probably lose the final but it has been a good start to the season for him.

Entertaining match and surprising result for me. Gaël tried hard to choke at times, but his shotmaking was too good.
@PerfectAce753 I would watch Gaël's match against Goffin in the first round. IMO it was better than this match.

Too much tennis lately for Medvedev, who won Sofia. Monfils could have won the match a lot easier, but hey at least he won.
Does he have enough left in the tank to win the final too? He's 2-3 vs Wawrinka and 1-4 vs Nishikori. Good luck.

#nextgen:spit::lol:

any of these up and comers not play like total shit this week?
What a are you talking about. Medvedev simply was playing day in day out for two weeks now, and ran into rejuvenated Monfils. If you think you have to play like total shit to lose to such a match, I have no comment.

Very much the expected result.

Some people are so mean. Like they always desperately ask for new and young players to come out and switch places with the old generation to make tennis less boring, but when the kids do actually play well (and of course the hype has to be there because ATP desperately wants them to be the next stars too), they want them to have losses. And when losses come, they laugh and mock them with something like "nextgen my ass", "goodbye nextgen". Like seriously, make up your mind? Wtf do you guys actually want?

This was Monfils' best win in years considering the level it took to knock off Medvedev. Surprised he had the focus level to get through, but he really wanted this one.

Of course, it's a final next match and we all know what that means...

This is classic MTF. It was like this all the time. Nadal and Djokovic were also called overrated here when they were young and lost a match.

Wait a minute, overrated? The guy is actually underrated. People have been talking about Shapo, Zverev, Chung, Tsitsi, Kach etc. Many have started to notice Doctor Medvedev's improvements in recent months. The guy is here to stay. He is improving all the time, but he should not push himself too hard. Overplaying is not a good idea, even for a guy his age. He lost a match to a decent player, and it's the end of the world.

May be it can be explained these new tall pushers are changing the game, making it more one-dimentional like the WTA, but that's just a guess

that's one reason. the other one is, that they win a great match and then loose against world nr. 200 and stuff like that.

but it was a good run from medvedev.

For me at least , that would be fine as long as someone capable of hitting winners like Wawrinka or generating power like Tsonga ,etc or dismantles with angles and stuff like Nalbandian or just some one with a crushing FH, not even talking of a net game here Was looming.

The winners stats getting a big serious hit right now in favor of the Forced Error , damn it
