Lu played one match in the run up to this tournament on clay but it looked a pretty competitive match, losing to Rosol 6-1 6-7(1) 5-7 and he won more points in that match.

Kavcic retired in his last match and lost to John Millman before that so perhaps no surprise despite Lu's criminal record on the surface.
