The match meant way too much to both players for the quality to be high.
But Rafa was much better at handling the ups-and-downs of their sets, including the vicissitudes that come with feeling the nerves of chasing history, and knowing that this is a significant entry in what may become a record-setting rivalry.
Rafa also proved to be the better micro-adjuster to opponent-tactics. He was moving in and out of at least three game plans. Even on a stroke as simple as the serve. That unsettled Djokovic from the first game to the last. Like Murray he never got a handle on the return, and without that slight advantage winning three sets off Rafa on clay isn't just a mountain; it's the entire Himalayas.
