Yep. Guys like Raonic and Isner already hold on every surface, they don't get much benefit from grass in that regard. Every other player with an average serve does, though.

It was very important until they fixed it at the beginning of this second millennium. Now fortunately is important only.

How many Wimbledon finals would Roddick have been in without his serve? A good well placed serve is very effective on any surface, espeically on grass, if a player knows how to play the net and is an outstanding or great voller, things Roddick was not, which is the reason he never won Wimbledon or more than one slam. The main reason Roddick reached any Wimbledon final was due to his fast serve. No wonder he is a one slam wounder! His idiocy is also displayed on that talk show. If this idiot gets into the tennis HOF, then the HOF has no signifcance.

Spot on.

Only serve is not enough, but the serve is obviously important on grass.

Umm how about Murray's whole 2013 Wimbledon run?

Short term memory?

Andy was rolling serves in against Novak and still won.

You do know what you just listed was an exception which confirms the rule.

I partially agree with Andy. Serves are more difficult to handle on grass, which granted Andy 3 Wimbledon finals. But serve doesn't mean everything guaranteed on this surface. Considering Isner is better on clay than grass. Slow courts allows him more time to react and move. He doesn't benefit too much from his serve though. Good returners still trouble him on grass. You can name many players who has big serves but does not play their best tennis on grass: Wawrinka, Gulbis, Soderling, Del Potro. On the other hand, Players like Hewitt, Kohli, Darcis are not top servers but still grass is their best surface. Serve is important on grass, but is very likely overrated as well.

Footwork is underrated in that regard. That's why grass is Federer's best surface. You have bunch of balls which lands very close of your feet and if you can't move quickly, you'll get punished. See Rafa's lost losses on grass. He barely could move.

The serve is not the most important aspect of playing on any kind of court, not only on grass. I believe that the return serve is.
