after an atrocious 1st set and going down 0:2 in the second, Domi stepped it up and played quite well, i thought
all credit to Munar who played as well as i have seen him play, frustrating Domi with tons of well-executed dropshots and superb defense

no knee issues for Domi which is the most important thing here. next two rounds will be players outside the top 100 which should activate Domi's vulture instinct (if it wasn't activated already..)

btw this is the first match thread i started so don't [email protected]#$ this up my friends ;)

Well done, Dominic! Judging by the scoreline, as I expected, he struggled a bit at the beginning but got the job done in the end.

But the most important thing is knee issue seems not to be bothering him any more, right?

I don't know what to expect from this Mager guy - looks like he's peaking in this tournament but hopefully Dominic will get over that hurdle easily. Would be ideal to bag 500 here and then get some rest, take care of the knee (if needs be) and do some training block before the desert where he defends 1000 points.

Entertaining match, Munar frustrated Thiem a lot with a healthy combo of moonballs, dropshots, S&V and relentless defense. Thiem never really settled in the match, he must be relieved to get over the finish line in the end. MP hawkeye drama two days in a row ?

post match statements
"All that counts is the win," Thiem said. "That's what I did today. I was fighting great from the first to the last point. That's what I'm proud of today and that's what I'm taking on [to the next round]. Tomorrow is a new day."
"I felt a little bit tight at the beginning and I think when I was a set and a break down a little bit of pressure fell off and then I raised my level a little bit," Thiem said. "When I made a break for 1-2 in the second set I felt this little kick coming through my body and I was able to raise my level and from that moment I was putting a little bit more energy and I was able to turn the match around."
"I think he's ranked worse at the moment than he's playing. He played a good match, didn't give me any free points. For sure I wasn't at my best again. For sure I'm not yet at my level again which I had in Australia. But it's normal. I'm back on clay for the first time since August."

i think Domi reached a new career high 3 in the rankings with this win.. congratulations!

the match was in the middle of the night for me, so no way I was going to watch it. But good to read that Domi won and mostly has no problem anymore with his knee. Mager should be piece of cake in QF, and then in the SF Balazs or Pedro Martinez. Honnestly, I would be disappointed if Domi would not win this tournament. Garin is probably the greatest threat for Domi in this tournament.

Munar is a good clay courter so I am not surprised thiem struggled against him. This level should be enough to win the tournament.

Why is a ATP500 tournament so light on good players? Marseille is aguably more stacked...
Because there will be soon 2 masters on hard...

MM IMO is not so bad , it had some of the good clay specialists, its in South america and better field is not to be expected . One of the reasons is that there are no mandatory tournament (ATP1000) during this SA clay swing .

But yeah Of course Marseille had the most top players and its a 250 . Kudos to their T director ?!

Because there are much fewer players that are good on clay.
In fact there are much fewer above good SA players than in the past of those none are top players, let alone clay players . So of course these clay fields are gonna suffer a degrading . In the past even a rising Nadal had to work for it , it had Coria , Nalbadian , Gaudio , Gonzales and others . On the whole there is a crisis of adaptation to modern tennis over here . Like there in USA and other parts . Look at Delray Beach , in the past had much better players IMO .

Thiem is distracted here in Rio. seen hanging out with different hot babes each day and night at the beach. doubt he will win this tournament. his only motivation to win atleast until the weekend is that rios wild carnival starts this weekend and he has tickets.

Terrible stuff from Thiem till 6-7 0-2. He played very passively for his standards, and yet still errored all over the place. Those two consecutive misses at *4-3 up in the TB were especially bad.

Then after conceding the break in the 2nd he suddenly started to really swing through that FH again, and he immediately won 10 of the next 13 games. Of course he clowned up the next service game in epic style, and got close to getting broken again at 4-4 *15-30, but he fortunately dug himself out of that hole, and finally played a very good return game to seal the deal. It always takes him some time to really get into a tournament, so let's hope he is settled now, and starts playing some better tennis from now onwards

Munar otoh was super solid and played some great dropshots, but that type of defensive tennis just doesn't work against Thiem when he isn't playing as badly as in the first set

Didn't want to watch this because of time, but couldn't sleep anymore at 4.30 am so this match was the way to go. Thiem looked bad, but since he had been down set and break, he must have been even worse before I started watching.

Court looked dead-slow and basically confirmed what I have been saying for quite some time now. Thiem is a better player on many types of HCs than on these types of clay courts, even though MTFs flawless experts kept trying to convince everybody how poor of a player he is outside of clay.

I've been saying it for months as well.
I seriously expect him to do some damage in Wimbledon this year. He was extremely unlucky last couple of years there so his results on grass are really not representative of his full potential on this surface.

he improved his serve and also ROS, but i think both could get even more consistent (already good in big moments..)

True, especially ROS. He can vary it more now and on some occasions return closer to the baseline which is crucial on quicker surfaces. He also handles better the low bounces on both wings which was an issues earlier on with his big swing.
