Rio Open pode não ser realizado em 2021, afirma jornal - Tenis News

Rough google translation

By Fabrizio Gallas - In a report, the Spanish daily MARCA states that the Association of Professional Tennis Players (ATP) is working to design a 'tour' in the Persian Gulf region and that for this reason, the Rio Open would "disappear" from the calendar.

The daily reports that the ATP would change the position of the ATP 250 in Doha, Qatar, in the calendar, which would go from the first week of February to the next, a date that is occupied by the Rio tournament. The Rio Open, in the words of the newspaper "disappears" from the calendar and for this reason the ATP "is looking for a seat for an ATP 500, which replaces Rio de Janeiro" and states that the option would be Saudi Arabia.

Following Doha, the ATP 500 from Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, would come, as traditionally in the third week of February. Thus, the tour would be configured with Doha, Dubai and Saudi Arabia in sequence.

Sought by Tennis News, the Rio Open communication team denied the information from the Spanish daily and says that it has ascertained all possible scenarios about the 2021 Calendar.
Wow, nothing more exciting than a middle eastern swing, the tennis culture there is legendary.

🤮🤮🤮🤮

Cash wins. Also what happens to other tournaments in South America. I think tennis is relatively popular here. They should put more emphasis in this region.
Yep. They'll use COVID as an excuse for this move but I guarantee you that if when COVID finally goes away that that tournament will STAY in Saudi Arabia.

It's all about the $$$$$$$$$$$

Your buddy Trump loves to do business with Saudi Arabia. Why are you complaining?

On a more serious note, I would never take money from that country. It's a beautiful country with a rich history, but their government is one of the most dangerous in the world and the Western World does nothing because of oil.

Can we not have tennis tournaments in countries whose human rights records are shockingly diabolical, please?

$$$$$$ makes an eye easily turn blind.
Hmm, yes, true. The amount of tournaments held in China despite their appalling behaviour tells us as much.

Tbh, the obscene amount of money that the Saudis will pay will be pretty sought after by the players, who haven't made money in about nine months
yeah that's the way life works unfortunately. Money, money, money.

also a reason I never took his tirade against China seriously. He's still intent on scratching the back of the Saudis, none more apparent than in the Khashoggi incident. Another case of looking out for your friends. A hypocrite of the highest order.
