Reid scores first adidas International wildcard

Tournament Director Craig Watson announced today that Sydney teenager Todd Reid has been granted the first wild card for January's adidas International presented by Uncle Toby's.

"Todd has been making steady progress on the tour and he has been a member of the Optus Australian Davis Cup squad," said Mr. Watson. "I am delighted to be able to provide him with an early Christmas present by way of another wild card into his home town event. Todd is one of our outstanding young prospects and I expect something like this would be great encouragement for him."

Reid was given a wild card into the 2003 adidas International. He came up against 8th seed Gaston Gaudio in the first round and lost a very close three setter to the Argentine.

Reid, 19, had an outstanding junior career during which time he won junior Wimbledon and was runner-up at the Australian Open juniors. 2003 was his first full year on the circuit. His best result at a tour-level event was reaching the third round at The Queen's Club in London just before Wimbledon where he defeated Jan-Michael Gambill before being stopped by eventual champion Sebastien Grosjean.

During the year Reid won three Futures tournaments - two in Australia and one in Great Britain and he was a semifinalist at another two. He also reached the quarterfinals of the Kyoto Challenger.

There are another two wild cards to be awarded for the men's draw and three for the women's draw. Mr. Watson will be making a decision on those over the next few weeks as the countdown begins to the tournament.
