The first week of 2009 US Open has had another astonishing lack of upsets. All top 16 seeds made the 3rd round and only two failed to make it one step further.

The first week of 2007 AO has had an astonishing lack of upsets. 14 out of the top 16 seeds have made the last 16.

Courtesy of smucav:
ESPN2 announced that 14 (2007 Australian Open) was the highest number of top 16 seeds to advance to R16 at a slam since the 1971 Australian Open.

Re: Top 16 Seeds through to the 2nd Week

Explains why Hewitt won Wimb'02, only 2 seeds made the 2nd week including himself.

Him and Henman were the only top 16 seeds that made it.

That was a very strange slam, although Nalbandian's appearance in the final wouldn't be considered a surprise anymore.

Re: Top 16 Seeds through to the 2nd Week

i always thought RG caused most upsets....

indeed, it is wimbledon....

first i thought this is because most high ranking clay court players lost in early round of wimbledon, but wimbledon has its own seeding system....... so those who do not do well on grass shouldnt have a high seed no..... hm....

interesting stat...

"Top 16 seeds through to the 2nd week"???

Ljubicic (4)?

There are certainly more through than is normal, though.

Edit - ah, ok, you weren't saying all 16 were through, just comparing! The thread title misled me.

Not exactly, the Wimbledon system isn't totally based on grass performance, it only weights differently grass results. If it really weighted only grass performance, guys like Nadal, Blake and Robredo would never be seeds.

As soon as you said Henman, you might as well just say Hewitt was the only seed left in the draw

Well, in fairness, if it weren't for that 2002 tournament, Wimbledon would be the same as the other 3 slams. It was just that one freak year that did it.

Re: Record Number of Top 16 Seeds through to the 2nd Week

What are you talking about Nadal wouldn't lose to that guy in a 5 set match, even you know that. He pulled out b/c he wanted to be fit for Australia, and not risking hurting himself on some average player.

He lost to Youzhnyin five, that's no great deal.

If even Kendrick got his chances, Guccione would have much better chances with that lefty serve.

Re: Record Number of Top 16 Seeds through to the 2nd Week

Great post. Median makes much more sense than averages for this dataset. Hence, the median number of seeds are:

AO: 9
RG: 8
W: 8
US: 8

So, yes AO is slightly more predictable, but, the other ones are so close together as well.
