even though RAFA`s still #2 in the rankings, & closer to FED than he`s ever been, the start of 2008 doesn`t bode well for the rest of his career:sad::eek:..

1.Chennai: Loses the final 1-6, 0-6 to Youzny:sad:
2. AO: loses SFs 2-6, 3-6, 2-6 to Tsonga:p
3. Rotterdam Rd.2 loses to Seppi:eek:
4. Dubai QFs loses to Roddick><

Last year Rafa Nadal & his uncle Toni publicly stated that they would be playing the Sth American clam swing again for the 1st time since Rafa`s breakout 2005 season, when he won the titles in Brazil & Mexico to ignite a magnificent season..

Well for the 3rd year in a row Rafa`s made the same stupid mistake of beginning with the European indoor tourneys after AO.. & it`s not helping his confidence:eek:

How many more poundings can the `Vamos kid` take:confused:

I like Rafa a lot, but doubt he`ll ever get to the Wimbledon final again & unlikely to challenge for other majors [except FO].. Unless he changes his technique dramatically, which seems unlikely...

I agree - he should have played the South American claycourt swing. Less points and money on offer, but clay is where Rafael is at home.

A sensible option would have been

SYDNEY
MELBOURNE

BRAZIL
MEXICO

Hopefully he will do it next year.

Rafa already dominates major clay tournaments. If he really wants to improve as a player, he should play different surfaces as well, like he´s doing now. What does south-american circuit have to offer to a player who´s already won everything there is to be won on clay?

But nobody can get to No. 1 by fulfilling his schedule with optionals and MM tournaments....

His reasons for not playing the SA clay swing have been discussed time and again.

He'll play it next year.

It's all very well being wise after the event.

It is the time of year that Nadal is finished and/or burnt out. Of course, predicting that every February, eventually it will turn out to be true. As for why he didn't play at SA, it is obvious, he is better off financially from Rotterdam and Dubai than he would be from Buenos Aires and Acapulco.

Don't agree with this. If he wants to improve on hard court he needs to go deep into hard tournaments where he'll get good matches. But he needs confidence for that. And where does he get confidence? By winning tournaments on clay. Why do you think he plays so well at Wimbledon?

Yes, he can probably generate some momentum heading to US master series like he did after FO

Wilander suggested that Nadal should play more clay tournaments and play very offensive on them (pretend it's hardcourt).

He should play SA swing, then play Vegas before IW as his confidence will be high from the SA swing and it will transistion over to hardcourt pretty easily, in time for IW.

i`ve said it b4 & i`ll say it again:: NADAL was foolish to skip the Sth American clay swing for the 3rd successive year><!!!
#**#.now his title drought has extended~~ closing in on 10 months & he`s feeling extra heat this year due to the compacted European clay schedule [ATP vs. Olympics issue]!

if Nadal fails to defend Monte Carlo you can be sure the knives will be out & all of this could have been avoided if he`d played a couple of MM tourneys in February & posted a couple of tourney wins to get his confidence up & monkey off his back:)>
