RAFA and Roger leading the way again. Record for most titles by a duo in one year.

Both Fed and Rafa are having amazing years which inspired me to create this thread. There is a big difference between the years 1973-1984 and then afterwards. You don't see duos winning all the tournaments anymore like you used to because the depth of the men's game has increased so much and the titles are all spread around to different players, but Rafa and Federer are changing that this year--they will not make it to 26, but they can definitely reach 20. OUt of all the top 30 duos (those who have won at least 17 titles between them), 17 of them are from the 70's, 10 are from the 80's, 2 are from the 90's and 1 from the 2000's. A duo has combined to win 20 or more tournaments 10 times before. A duo has BOTH won 10+ tournaments only twice before. A player had to win a minimum of 4 titles in a year to get on the list.

Re: RAFA and Roger going for the record? Record for most titles by a duo in one year.

Federer has a better chance to reach 10, but it would be hard pressed for Nadal
Re: RAFA and Roger going for the record? Record for most titles by a duo in one year.

I think their total will equal 20 by year's end. If Federer does win 2 more titles, he will join a very elite group that has won 10+ titles in back to back years. That group includes Nastase (12 in '72, 14 in '73) and Lendl (10 in '81, 15 in '82). They are the only ones. Connors did have an impressive stretch of 14, 9, and 12 wins from '74-'76.
Re: RAFA and Roger going for the record? Record for most titles by a duo in one year.

both can break the record for most TMS in a year. they each just need to win 1 more.

roger can do that in cincy, while it would be great for nadal to get the one in madrid in front of the home crowd.

... i'm beginning to wonder if they will indeed hog all the TMS. hehe 6 out of 9 so far!
Re: RAFA and Roger going for the record? Record for most titles by a duo in one year.

^9 out of 9 would be just stunning. I don't think it will happen though. 6 out of 9 is pretty selfish of those guys as it is :)
Re: RAFA and Roger going for the record? Record for most titles by a duo in one year.

Thanks for this thread, it's very unique and interesting :D

I think it is possible they could hog all the TMS tourneys.

Roger has a huge chance to makes it 7 out of 9 this week and Rafa could win Madrid - its not that fast.

Paris will be the hard one - that's Marat territory

Also another interesting stat is that if Roger wins this week then all over the Masters-Series, Grand Slams and TMC will currently be held by 3 men.

Federer - Wimbledon, US Open, TMC, Indian Wells, Miami, Hamburg, Cincinatti
Nadal - Roland Garros, Monte Carlo, Rome, Montreal
Safin - Australian Open, Madrid, Paris

I think that would be pretty rare also

 great observation
Re: RAFA and Roger going for the record? Record for most titles by a duo in one year.

In 1994 Alberto Berasategui got 7 titles Athens, Montevideo, Nice, Palermo, Santiago, Stuttgart Outdoor, Umag; if I'm not wrong that's more than 6 from Chang
Re: RAFA and Roger going for the record? Record for most titles by a duo in one year.

Thanks for this thread, I was wondering about such a rivalry for titles won in one year too!

We mustn't forget Marat, who shines at the indoor tourneys -- he has Madrid AND Paris [his fave] to defend.

I still want to see a Nadal/Safin matchup.
Re: RAFA and Roger going for the record? Record for most titles by a duo in one year.

i find it funny that though sampras and agassi were considered greatest rivals during their careers, the both of them never dominated together.

NYCTennisfan is one of my favorites. How do you think of these things?

Bother to give us Navratilova/Evert stats? Graf/Seles stats?

But I'm no liptea :) Luckily, I have the ATP database that I use in my freetime at work i.e. the time when everyone goes home and I stay late but I take a 20 minute break and eat something and fiddle with the database:)

Thanks propi. :) I will make the change. For some reason I was remembering Alberto only having won 5 times that year.

Fed and Nadal up to 18 after Fed's win in Cincy.

Talk about stats. This one is mind blowing. Great stuff, JeNn !!
Re: RAFA and Roger going for the record? Record for most titles by a duo in one year.

1977 was a bad year for all players other than Vilas and Borg. They didn't leave any titles left...

hehe. except Connors who had 7 (see, the second one)
Re: RAFA and Roger going for the record? Record for most titles by a duo in one year.

Way back when the tour was a mess. You would harldy ever see the top layers playing together at the same time. THe TMS has been a blessing for the tour.
