Obviously he'll seal the deal if he can win tomorrow, but even if not he's the clear choice. Does anyone want to try to debate otherwise?

Well an anticlimactic way to end the season today but he's still the clear choice.

For what?
Winning grand slam without facing Djokovic or Nadal?
He lost so early on RG , he did managed to preform really well at AO but still lost in the moment of true just like WTF.

There is no player of the year.
If you looking for some headlines so..
  • Nadal with the biggest accomplishment of the year reaching 20 #
  • Djokovic was so unlucky with the COVID 19 and the USO DQ, without those he probably ended this year with 19 slams.

Thiem only won one GS. Why should he rather win than Djokovic and Nadal who also won a GS?

Djokovic sealed the no 1 record and Nadal reached the #20. It's either Nadal or Djokovic.

Most likely it's Djokovic. He won 1 Grand Slam (AO), 2 Masters (Cincy and Rome) as wel as the ATP Cup. Nobody has won more than Djokovic.

Nadal won a slam.
Djokovic won a slam and made the final of another.
Thiem won a slam (his first btw) and made the final of another and beat the other two at the WTF.

"Player of the year" is not just about who earned the most points, but who stepped up when it mattered. Unfortunately he made the debate a bit messy by failing to close out Medvedev, but he still has the strongest argument.

Nadal is player of the year of course for equalling Federer's record and becoming the new GOAT

It, kind of, mattered in AO final, RG QF and WTF F, as well, IMO.

He deserves it, tidied up those early round exits, kept up a high hard-to-overcome level, and is one of the most unhateable top tier stars I can recall from the last quarter century.

If he only won one tournament all year then clearly, for the most part, he didn't step it up when it mattered?

An argument can certainly be made for Thiem for "Player of the Year." He had an amazing year - winning his first slam and making a slam final in Australia. However, I believe that Djokovic edges it out due to having won 5 titles while having similar results in slams.

Even though 2020 has been cut in significant proportions, the fact remains that Djokovic has won the most important tournaments, including the ATP Cup in the preamble.

ATP Cup
AO
Dubai
Cinci
Rome.

Nadal
Acapulco
RG

Thiem
US

Medvedev
Bercy
Masters

At least here there is no distortion caused by freezing points.

This does not detract from Thiem's places of honor and promises him good prospects in 2021.
