I never knew this, Petr Korda had four shots to earn the no. 1 ranking in 1998, losing all four matches, with two being three setters, and one vs Krajicek in Monte Carlo, it came down to a single second set tiebreaker. But Korda lost it and then the third set. Korda was so close to no.1 and the million$$$ in bonu$e$ but he choked, failed, got tight, whatever you want to call it.

What other ATP players came very close to no. 1 but failed and got stuck at no.2? Haas have any cracks at no. 1? Chang did but he lost to Rafter at US Open, I think that was his one shot at no. 1.

You get paid for being number 1?
Yes, players have big fat bonuses if they win a major or become world no. 1. For example Marcelo Rios got $2.5m bonuses each from his sponsors Nike and Yonex when he beat Agassi in the Miami Open final to become ATP world no. 1. That was in 1998. So the numbers are much bigger now.
