NEW YORK (AFP) - Paul Annacone, coach of U.S. tennis great Pete Sampras, is trying to convince the 14-time Grand Slam champion to keep playing.

"I hope that he decides to play on next year," Annacone said.

"I'm doing all I can to push him to come back because I'm convinced he has it in him to win a few more Slams. But the question is whether he wants to make the sacrifices."

Sampras, 31, won his 14th Grand Slam title at the U.S. Open in September - his first tournament title since Wimbledon 2000.

In October he withdrew from all of his remaining events for the season to focus on family life - he and his wife, actress Bridgette Wilson, had their first child in November, when Christian Charles Sampras was born.

Annacone said that Sampras had continued to train, and could easily resume playing if he chooses.

"Right now, it's up in the air. It's 50/50," he said. "Pete has been practicing the last two months. He never really stopped playing after winning the Open. He's really fit physically.

"But if he decides to go to Australia, he needs to pick it up another notch."

At the end of November, organizers of the tournament in Indianapolis announced that they expected Sampras in the field for the tournament in July.
