saddest of the news today as oliver golding, one of the most promising british players, has announced his retirement from the sport

he also said there are not many facilities in london to play tennis and stop giving extra money from british federation to futures players is a bad choice

i will miss him a lot, he was promising...i saw him playing many times live, from spanish futures some years even to wimbledon =(

first interview after retiring:

Re: Oliver Golding(Us Open jr 2011 champ, #327) calls it a career

Well, it's more taking some time off than retirement, but yeah, I found it shocking too

A career in business is a possibility, though he does not rule out returning to the tour in a year’s time if he feels he is missing it. (Which he hasn’t, particularly, as yet.)

21 years old, good lord. Hasn't played since July

But he is still very much a kid, I would be shocked if he doesn't make a comeback

Re: Oliver Golding(Us Open jr 2011 champ, #327) calls it a career

Golding can complain all he wants, but in the end he just had a terrible mentality and that's the reason why he was very unlikely to make it, despite the obvious talent. I've seen him play a couple of matches at futures and each time he acted like a totally spoilt brat. It's laughable that a guy who was lucky enough to enjoy so many facilities (fundings, personal coach travelling with him, wildcards into big tournaments, ...) is complaining about "a hell of a tough life". I'm not saying that there aren't things to improve in English tennis, but the stuff he complains about is definitely not the reason why he didn't make it.

Well said. If it's tough for him, what can guys from much poorer and less tennis-friendly countries say.

well he has not the best mental strength thats for sure, but federation didnt help him as much as some of you said, since he was cut with funds he was receiving just like david rice for example

He definitely had spoiled brat syndrome.

I'm surprised he called it quits after he was actually on the rise this year.

well, i think george morgan clearly failed to make the trantition from juniors to the tour. he had a very average career, worse than expected. so it was expected he would retire anyway, sadly...

but hewitt had a really decent season in 2013. he also won a futures title in 2014. he was on the rise...

and so was meehan. he has a crazy mind, but he has potential on the tour. he was starting to rise as well

carpenter was(well still is) ranked in the 600s, getting his high career this year, and winning his only futures singles title this year as well

but of course, the toughest loss is oli golding´s yeah

Looks like he had Bell's Palsy (or something similar) like me. Shame he couldn't go further.
are you talking about his lips? no idea, tbh
