A shame for Smith, he played a high intensity match against Denis Kudla in Winnetka last week. I don't know how he played today but I was rooting for him to get through the qualies and even more considering the fact that he was facing Odesnik. Maybe the fact that Odesnik is a left hander as well as him didn't help. After all Smith often tries to dominate the points with the cross court forehand, and that didn't work neither against Kudla because Denis has a good and solid backhand.

Smith becomes very tight in important points and sends some easy shots out. His other "problem" is that he usually gives 100% to break in every game and also pushes in many points from 2m behind the baseline instead of attacking despite having the opportunity because he's too afraid to miss which tires him and causes his serve to decline throughout the match.
