Re: New to the top 100 - 2019 [0]

Pedro Sousa - will get there for a while, although I doubt he is a serious Top100 player. But he was so close so many times that he actually somehow deserves that. Nothing to defend till April actually, so being #104 means that he doesn't need anything extraordinary to become Top100

Prajnesh Gunneswaran - I also doubt he is Top100 material, but getting there @ 30 y.o would be special. A lot to defend in April already, so he needs some good shown early in the season

FAA - will get there soon and stay there for a loooooong time

Lloyd Harris - one of the most improved players in 2018, started the year from ITFs and ended close to Top100, should get there and be a regular

Casper Ruud - I am very disappointed, although he's still young and with potential

Elias Ymer - look above, I thought he will be Top100 already in 2017, one of the biggest disappointments in my evaluation of players' potential

Londero, Trungelliti, Jung - c'mon - would not be deserved at all, saw them all and nobody is more than a challenger journeyman, they don't deserve it imo

Who else ? Last year we had some really surprising entrants - Humbert, Dellien, Andreozzi, so for sure someone from outside the radar will enter. Kecmanovic, Hoang (my silent dark horse), Popyrin are my shots, but this season really looks rather pesimistic in comparison to 2018 (although I was saying the same about 2018 to 2017)

I think that Sousa, Ramanathan, Aliassime, Moutet, E. Ymer, Uchiyama, Gerasimov, Ruud, Kozlov, Ofner, Malla, Argüello, Kecmanovic, Polmans, Eubanks, Popyrin, Caruso and Baldi will enter into TOP 100

I do hope Sousa can join his brother.

Harris I don't think is top 100.

Will be more difficult to make top 100 now with Challenger format changed.

I think Auger Aliassime, Ruud and Kecmanovic will make it. Popyrin possibly as well.

Trungelliti puzzles me, because at Slams he often plays better than at Challengers. He has the game, but not the consistency.

I was talking to Mardy Fish after he played Kecmanovic at World Team Tennis and he said to watch out for him, so i'll go with him.

Re: New to the top 100 - 2019 [0]

Looking at the live rankings:

101 Sousa
102 Gunneswaran
105 Auger-Aliassime
109 Harris
112 Londero
113 Trungelliti
114 Jung
116 Polansky
117 Ymer
118 Kecmanovic
120 Travaglia
123 Popyrin
125 Ruud
127 Maden
128 Bolt
129 Kubler

Obviously a lot can change in the next week (4 Challengers). But that's a lot of players within striking distance of the Top 100. Bolt and Popyrin are still in the AO MD.

The Koblenz Challenger isn't really going to make a difference.

Re: New to the top 100 - 2019 [0]

This week's only contenders:

Felix Auger-Aliassime (R32 Rennes)
Lloyd Harris (R32 Burnie)
Jason Jung (R32 Newport Beach)
Peter Polansky (R32 Newport Beach)
Miomir Kecmanovic (R32 Newport Beach)

Harris, Jung, Polansky and Kecmanovic would need to win their events and hope no one overtake them. FAA has a better shot.

Auger-Aliassime with a bad loss in the second round to Karatsev, so his chances are gone. Harris with a bad loss to Banes.

Three guys left standing in Newport Beach:

R32 Polansky v Uchida
R16 Jung v Novikov
R16 Kecmanovic v Bellucci

No one made it last week.

This week, the only one in with a chance is Lloyd Harris. His chances are very slim: he'd need to win Launceston and then hope that Granollers and Berankis don't do too well this week.

Last year new entrants started appearing since mid-February and I think that it should be more or less the same in 2019.

Re: New to the top 100 - 2019 [0]

Sousa is probably in Portugal's top 10 most common last names, odds are high you'll hear about a bunch of us through the internets. :p

Considering Pedro has been denied a top 100 berth due to injuries for at least a couple of seasons, I couldn't wish harder for his improvement. But as I mentioned on last year's post, he has a grand total of 9 points to defend until April so even if he proves a HC gimp he'll probably get in at some point anyway.

As it was mentioned above, I think the enlarged Challenger pools will make it harder for people to break in as the odds for surprise results are higher. It looks like the ranks between 120-320 will get more and more even as the calendar goes.

That being said, I'll be very surprised if Popyrin doesn't break in, but we've said the same about Ymer and Ruud for years now. Can we all agree we've given up on Quentin Paire 2.0 though?

Re: New to the top 100 - 2019 [0]

Lloyd Harris could get in this week if he wins Launceston. Given that Jay Clarke (198 in the live ranking) is the highest ranked remaining opponent in the QFs, this seems well possible.

Yeah, I mentioned this already.

Harris has a good shot, but then again he lost to Banes in straight sets last week. So it's not guaranteed by any means.

Harris is one match away (in which he is a big fav btw) from becoming first new Top100 player this season.

Would be a major and surprising accomplishment for Harris. Let's see if he can beat Giustino!
