Time to kick this off. Kovalik looks closest to the entry point this year. Last year it was Nishioka (which eventually entered), but the first one to enter was Fritz.

Re: New to the top 100 - 2017 [0]

Another year for milestones! I wonder if the average age will be higher than last year. We had another record oldest Top 100 breakthrough last year so who knows. I wonder if prospects from last year will finally breakthrough here this year.

The average age of the new top 100 was significantly lower last year than in the previous ones. But I am almost sure that it will be even lower this year. There are quite a few U21 with reasonable chances to make it (Rublev, Escobedo, Kozlov, Lee, Ymer, Halys, Bublik, Opelka, Rubin, maybe even Ruud or Tsitsipas) but not many above 25 (maybe Copil, Gombos, Giannessi, Ignatik?), in my opinion.

With Nicolas Kicker reaching the QF in Rio, he is currently at 100 in the live rankings. He could definitely be passed by a few players still active this week but he could be the first of 2017.

Kicker is not yet confirmed as pjr428 mentions. Gombos can still theoretically pass him if he wins this match against Kyrgios (not likely), in which case, he'd be the one to enter Top 100.:grin2:

One way or another, at least one player will enter Top 100 this week.

Ruud would be another option. But even more unlikely.

Yeah. Gombos fell to Kyrgios, so while he's still the favourite to be #2 the only way for Kicker to lose his #100 spot is if Ruud takes the Rio title. :p

As it stands, a RU for Casper would take him to #103 and the title to #67 so I dare say Kicker's got it safe.

Interestingly, the 3 closest men are sequentially ranked at #111 (Rublev), #112 (Gombos) and #113 (Escobedo), then #115 (Kozlov) and #118 (Kovalik, who for some reason is still managing to evade his berth)

Well, congrats to Nicolas. Well deserved. Interesting that the first entrant this year is exactly 52 weeks after last year's first entrant.

Congratulations to Kicker for making his improved form count and join the club! :p it's still the 3-digit spot though, let's see if he can get one better.

Let's make the round for this week's contestants.

Escobedo and Kozlov need QFs at Acapulco, and that wouldn't still be totally safe.
Same with the eternal Kovalik and a SF at São Paulo, a F would make the trick.
Copil has very fringe chances with a QF at Dubai.
Giannessi needs a F at São Paulo.
Ruud also needs to be São Paulo's finalist. So close from being within touch with that MP against Carreño!
...and Safwat needs to be a finalist at Dubai and I can't really say the odds are favourable there.

Escobedo and Kozlov interestingly had a showdown on 1R. Escobedo won and is a provisional #101, but his crucial opponent is Steve Johnson.

Copil on 103 live right now is on the verge. Other hopefuls are Escobedo (if he plays a challenger next week), Gombos, Kozlov, Laaksonen and Giannessi.

Escobedo qualified for the MD in Miami and is at 100 in the live rankings (ex-aequo with Kicker, but more points from GS). However, Pavlasek (against Fritz) and Kravchuck (against a qualifier) need only one win to pass him again. Lacko needs two wins, everyone else at least three. With a win in R1, he would be safe.

Escobedo won and is now at 97.

We still have to wait since many players are in challengers next week.

Only one of the group Melzer, Lacko, Stakhovsky and Gombos can actually pass him by winning St. Brieuc (no-one in Leon), so Escobedo is save to be at least 98 next week. Gombos could also get to the top 100, but he needs to win St. Brieuc.
