Re: New to the top 100 - 2014 [11 and counting]

Great work Bry17may, thanks for this perspective!

So this is the second slowest year in ATP history..if I have counted properly.
Not quite over yet I guess, still a coupe with a chance to make it in those last few challengers, but certainly not looking good!

I'd suggest the lower numbers of the last few years in part reflect the changes in ranking point weightings made in 2009 - upping slam/masters/500 points especially relative to challengers helps those already in top group stay there and interlopers out.

Also maybe the reason the top 100 is becoming older.

Wardy is one win away. Would be awesome to win a title at the same time.

The changes also affected the relative points for winning a tournament compared to bowing out in earlier stages, which has a similar effect of making the top players' tallies more out of reach for those trying to make it.

Thought it might be nice to take a look at where the class of 2014 were a year after they entered the top 100.

Interestingly, of the eight whose anniversaries have occurred so far, two now outside top 100 (though one only just). Average ranking a year on: 73.

Here they go:

Gojowczyk (Jan 27): 153 (highest, 79; current,157)
Lajovic (Feb 10): 77 (highest, 57 ; current, 96)
Thiem (Feb 17): 48 (current, 28)
Estrella (March 3): 56 (current, 43)
Rola (May 5): 99 (highest, 78; current, 101)
Schwatzman (June 9): 65 (highest, 57; current, 65)
Kyrgios (July 7): 41 (highest, 25)
Groth (July 14): 68 (highest, 66)

Rest:
Bagnis (Sept 8)
Krajinovic (Oct 6)
Coric (Oct 27)
