From the early looks of things, this figures to not be the case. I've found that sportsbooks have been well overpricing Monfils. This is because of the general betting public's unjustified sudden serge in confidence in the Frenchman. Truth is, he didn't play well in the Masters. Against Karol Beck he just totally fell apart at 5-2 up in the second set, and against Youzhny, he disintegrated. He wasn't even that good against Stepanek; Stepanek just didn't seem to want to play.

A Koubek playing well has as good a chance as any of crushing Monfils today. He's really probably Wednesday's best underdog bet.

But we shall see. I'm sure the prices on Monfils will discourage anybody here from bothering.

For all that you figure to win on the other three bets, that is if they DO all win, then you would've lost more than that gain if Spadea defeats Seppi. Are you serious?

Anyway, about Seppi's performance...did you really watch him against Tursunov? Because Seppi really didn't play that well at all. His was among the most mediocre displays of the entire first round.

It is true that Spadea's played poorly in the last three tournaments, but hey, it was only a month and a half ago that he was playing Rusedski in the final at Newport. Also, Seppi's got a total lack of recent hard court experience. Hasn't played in a hard court tournament since March. Though Spadea's no "safe" bet (if such a thing exists), my view is that Seppi does NOT look good here.

Were you among those who backed Spadea against Gilles Simon, by any chance? ;)

Regarding the disparaging comment made about Spadea's hard court form...

Have you wondered why you haven't been able to find the same form in Seppi's record?

It's because he hasn't even been getting through the qualifiers! Like last week, when he was stopped by South African tennis giant Wes Moodie in the very first qualifying round of the Cincy masters.

Oh... dear...

Yo Mr Lucky Jim, do you know of any sites providing information on Andy Ram's 2005 tournament record? atptennis.com seems to have nothing at all! Or is it that Mr Ram hasn't played in a singles tournament all year?

(Incidentally, they also don't mention what his place in the rankings is. Maybe he doesn't have one or something? :-/)

heaven help me, apologies to sportsfreak, but I'm thinking of a big bet on Spadea, not sure yet
I think you may be onto something there, pal. Though, the "big" part scares me. After all, this IS Vincent.

There's only one bet today that interests me, and that's a bet on Ram to beat the crap out of Nicolas Massu. After Ram's performance against Mello yesterday (however badly Mello may have played), I think Ram's worth backing...even if he DID only manage to convert under 30% of his break points. As for Massu, then sure, he's a really good clay court player, but he's horrid on hard court, at least as far as recent history is concerned. And there's a fair chance that he's more concerned with the US Open coming up.

Now, to disagree with coup3z again, the only other match I think is worth betting on is Koubek to beat Monfils! Monfils, no longer on the momentum rush given to him by his win in Sopot...having been brought back down to earth in the Cincinnati masters...I think he'll be pretty much back to his usual, mediocre performances. He really lost it against Karol Beck and Youzhny, and the way he went down to the latter, may just have given his confidence (or lack thereof) a turn for the worse. The dude's a very up and down player. He'll play well for 5 minutes, then make a ton of errors. It was only because Karol Beck choked on 5 set points that he managed to get as far as he did in the Masters. Until he shows he can win against more formiddable opposition over a sustained period, I wouldn't back him against Koubek on ANY surface.

I'd also suggest that nobody bets on Mathieu to beat Santoro. While Mathieu is good, Santoro played very well in the last round and... hang on a minute, it was only Kenneth Carlsen! Go Paul-Henri!

I'll ask an opinion:

Ram, Koubek and Santoro all look "good" to me, though I'm undecided upon which is best (though I think Santoro is the worst option hands down).

What do you veterans think?

ok, here goes - at the very least, I'm brave enough to post 'em :)
8.75 units on vinny - that's a good sized bet, but I reined it in on big (for me)
5 units on Ferrer x Haas x Monfils x Kohlschriebber (favs plus Melzer hasn't done much lately)
1 day after posting my Spadea/Zib never play promise, here I am
