Yes, will obviously be an important match but it won't be the most important match in their rivalry, or most important for the slam race as some posters suggest. Actually, I'd argue that the importance of this final can't big bigger than AO 2017 F or the WB 2018 SF or WB 2019 F? Why? AO 2017 would've significantly helped Rafa in the slam race, stopped Fed's resurgence, and given him DCGS. WB 2018 SF win would've meant another WB title for Rafa, that would simply be huge for his resume and the slam race.

As for this match, if Rafa wins it, his status only gets cemented, obviously, he ties Fed's record but Djoko still has more than a decent chance to catch up considering none of the younger players pose any threat in the biggest matches. If Djoko wins he gets DCGS, impressive achievement, but he'd still be 2 slams behind Fed.

Let's see what the consequences would be if AO 2017, WB 2018 SF, and WB 2019 F turned out differently than compare it with potential outcomes of RG final on Sunday between Rafa and Djoko.

AUSTRALIAN OPEN 2017 F NADAL WIN

SLAM RACE 17-15-12

Then we can say it goes as it did, Rafa winning RG and USO, Fed winning WB 2017.

SLAM RACE END OF 2017: 18-17-12

Federer still wins AO 2018, Rafa wins RG 2018.

SLAM RACE AFTER RG 2018: 19-18-12

WIMBLEDON 2018 SF NADAL WIN

SLAM RACE 19-19-12

Then we can say that Djoko still wins USO 2018.

SLAM RACE END OF 2018: 19-19-13

Djoko wins AO 2019, Rafa wins RG 2019.

SLAM RACE AFTER RG 2019: 19-20-14

WIMBLEDON 2019 F FEDERER WIN

SLAM RACE 20-20-14

ROLAND GARROS 2020 F POTENTIAL CONSEQUENCES

NADAL WIN SLAM RACE

20-20-17

DJOKOVIC WIN SLAM RACE

20-19-18

In case of a Nadal win on Sunday, we can say that Djoko still wins AO 21, the race is 20-20-18. Then Rafa wins RG 2021, 21-20-18. Wimbledon would then be of huge importance, and especially USO 2021. If Djoko wins WB 21, it's 21-20-19. USO would be huge as it could lead to 21-20-20 situation if Djoko wins it.

In case of a Djoko win on Sunday, it's 20-19-18. Then Djoko still wins AO and it's 20-19-19. Federer profits from this in short term, he will still have the record if Djokovic wins this RG and couldn't be tied before RG 2021.
Nadal then still wins RG 21, and he is still the one to tie the record despite the loss in RG 20 final. The race is 20-20-19. If Djoko then still wins WB we get to 20-20-20 which would be the most interesting outcome of all. Then US 2021 still becomes the most important slam even in this scenario. Whoever wins it becomes the new slam record holder.

Conclusions:

Wimbledon 2018 SF now appears to be the most important of these matches, had Rafa won that one, he'd tie the record already in 2018, and become the new slam record holder at 2019 RG.

It can happen after this RG final if Rafa wins it but winning Wimbledon would be more important for him.

What do you think?

It is the most important match because it is the next one, the one undecided. The one in the air. Not one from the past that has long been finished

Yet you can see that those previous matches were as important as the potential final on Sunday, perhaps even more important.

i think the most important match was Fedovic Wimby 2012. if Nole won that match, Fed would finished for good.

It's a HUGE MATCH FOR BOTH. Novak wins he is only 2 behind Federer at nearly 6 years younger than him. THINK ABOUT THAT.

Nadal wins he is at the same slam count as Federer. And Federer no longer has the lead he has held for 11 years.

And then if Nadal or Djokovic get to 21. Its takes ALOT away from Federers legacy. He will retire being one of the best of this era NOT THE BEST.

That said Novak has to beat³ the Greek first. So he may not even make the final. And if he doesnt. Nadal is going to to win his 20th slam for sure.

Might very well be no final such as this at all at this point. And, yeah, nadal was a favorite before but I can't see it going beyond 4 sets at this point. If tsitsipas pulls the comeback nadal will win the title without dropping a set.

Why do you think so? You really think a match that will probably go under 4 hours will make Djoko so tired he won't be able to put up a fight in the final? Come on.

No, novak is one of the fittest guys ever so he should be fine physically, but based on their history here and the last 2 matches both played, a djokovic win I will consider an upset.
Regarding historic relevance, the match it will either give nadal number 20 or DCGS for djokovic, so its important but it won't decide who is the most successful player between the trio.

This match is huge. It is for two Grand Slams. If Nole wins he is 1 behind Rafa. If he loses, he is 3 behind rafa.
