Rafael Nadal, not Roger Federer, is the highest-earning player in tennis, according to Sports Illustrated and Fortune magazine's annual rankings of athlete incomes.

Nadal was No. 3 among international athletes and said to have earned $42.5 million in 2013, while Federer was No. 4 with $41.2 million. Federer was, however, higher in endorsements earnings, with $38 million compared to Nadal's $28 million. Federer was No. 2 a year ago, while Nadal was No. 10.

Forbes' ranking of the highest-earning athletes, also published this month, had Federer with $56.2 million and Nadal with $44.5 million.

The rankings had Novak Djokovic at No. 9 with earnings of $30 million, with $18 million through endorsements, and Andy Murray at No. 20 with earnings of $17 million, $12 million in endorsements.

Maria Sharapova was No. 14 among international athletes with earnings of $23 million, $20 million though endorsements. Li Na and Serena Williams were the other tennis players named, with Williams No. 39 among U.S. athletes with $22.3 million, $10 million in endorsements. It is Williams' second appearance among the top 50, the first being in 2008.

really surprising. i thought federer was still earning more money...

i think it shows its the beginning of the end for federer...game wise, he is better this year than last year, but im sure he doesnt have many seasons on the top on his legs so he will keep earning less imo...

^ The SI list is done in collaboration with Fortune.

So which magazine is correct? That is quite a discrepancy in Federer's earnings.

Isn't Forbes more legit?
Pretty sure the difference comes down to Forbes being based on mid 2012-mid 2013 earnings whereas the other is calendar year 2013. And Fortune is a reputable business magazine just like Forbes so I suspect its methodology is legit.

SI has Nadal ahead of Federer in terms of prize money and endorsements in the athletic realm.

The Forbes list includes all of Federer's off court earnings, not just those connected to athletics, where Roger is still comfortably ahead by 10 million plus.

I think they didn´t count something to Roger´s endorsements deals - he should be No.1, i know Forbes is doing summer to summer and this is calendar year ranking, but Roger´s endorsements + apperance fees difference are so much higher than Rafa´s that prize money difference from Rafa can´t make it for Rafa to earn more money. Roger should be above 50 million

I don't know about Fortune, but Forbes is a joke. For example they calculated Spain king fortune in 2.300 millions of dollars but they included in their calculations stuff like "Palacio Real" for example, a building of 1722 where lives the head of state but is a state-owned property. Is like they included the White House as part of Obama personal fortune. They followed the same criteria to calculate the personal fortune of another leaders, like Fidel Castro for example.

Not really. "Fortune" stimation are made having in account 2013 calendar year and Forbes having in account summer 2012 (Nadal was injures, Federer won WB) - summer 2013

The Fortune ranking lists non-athletic Fed sponsors like Lindt and Gillette though.

So Rafa earned more in 2013 but Federer earns more overall? Sounds about right.
