“It’s a disaster,” said a defeated Nadal in the post-match press conference. “My game was mundane. I didn’t have enough power, speed and control in my forehand. I didn’t manage to push Fognini back.”

“Fabio played better and he deserved to win. I did not deserve to win. That’s why I will accept the upcoming challenges. I will work hard until I get back to my best. But it will be a while.”

Nadal, who lost to Fognini for the second time this season after the semi-finals in Rio de Janeiro, did not blame anxiety for his loss: “It is a technical problem, not a problem of anxiety.”

“It’s a very sad day for me. This tournament means a lot to me, it’s one of the best ATP 500 events on the tour and I feel at home,” said Nadal, who will travel home to Mallorca today. “I hope all the ups and downs will eventually come to an end and that I’ll be able to keep up with a good level. Sadly I wasn’t able to do so today…”

Haters will have a field day with the "mundane" part.

His game just lacks confidence now. I don't think his technique is off. Maybe his footwork and speed are just not getting him in the right positions anymore.

Is Rafa talking about his game in general or just today? Tough to distinguish between the two

For some reason, Nadal really, really likes Fognini. Nadal has defended Fognini tirelessly, and has even praised Fognini numerous times in press conferences in which Fognini had nothing to do with the prior match or the discussion at hand.

I think that is a large part of why Nadal goes so soft against Fognini. Even after losing to Fognini at Nadal's "home" tournament that Nadal has won eight times, Nadal was full of praise for Fognini and again trying to build up Fognini to the press. Nadal did the same thing after losing to Fognini in Rio, saying things like "you all just don't appreciate Fabio," "you are too hard on Fabio," "Fabio is a great player and person," etc.

Nadal really should be Fognini's PR specialist, as I can't think of another situation where a higher-ranked player constantly obsesses over a lower-ranked player so much.

Nothing like a good Nadal overreaction to a defeat.

They are both vile people. Nadal doesn't see any problem with Fog abusing Umpires cos he does it himself. Both spoilt brats.

Nadal would never use the word mundane.

I can only assume that the anti-"Dull" alliance is asleep or confused about the meaning of the word. Otherwise it is inexplicable that they haven't JUMPED at the field day incited by Nadal calling his own game dull.

Interesting point, i think he had the same "problem"(if we may call it so) as he played his maestro, also best friend, Moya.

Dull is now so pitiful that it is hard to have that much fun at his expense.
