In an interview to Stade 2 Rafa says:

"If you can compete safely, with the same possibilities for everyone, because we come from different parts of the world, and everyone can participate, I will be there. But today we must go with caution and responsibility to make the right decisions to guarantee the health of all of us who make up the world of tennis."

"I do not look to the future in a professional way but in a medical way to preserve the health of all tournament workers, ATP workers and all players."

He also said that he would prefer to play with the spectators and will be hard for him to adjust to play with empty stands.

Praiseworthy attitude, singling out the two most important conditions: the health of everyone concerned and the ability of everyone to participate.

If either condition is not met, then the tournament should not take place. Regarding the second condition: if e.g. Russians or South Americans or US players are barred from entry, then the tournament would be too devalued to have the same status as other slams, not to mention the obvious matter of fairness.

In any case, well done Rafa on his good sense. Let's hope he sticks to his guns if the shifty organisers pull any further nasty stunts.

We all know Roland Garros is a three-person race: Nadal, Djokovic and Thiem...with players like Zverev and Tsitsipas on the periphery. Many players (like the Americans and Kyrgios) often skip Roland Garros or a lot of clay tournaments entirely because they are simply not good on clay.

All players love to play and perform in front of people, the more the better, the more the more excited and inspired the player is. No spectators would hurt Fed Rafa and Djokovic who thrive by having their fan support. No fans could help players like Medvedev, Coric, Nishikori, Isner, etc, who don't get much special fan support. No fans adds a very interesting twist to US Open and FO.

Tennis being an individual sport makes quite a difference when there is a crowd. For example in football when there are empty stands, the atmosphere is dead but the match is played in a team and against a team, the impact of an empty stadium is not as big since you get support from your teammates.

Isner gets decent support in the US although it’s not exactly stellar considering that one match where Monfils was getting more support than Isner despite it being the US open.

More like Novak having to overcome & survive, esp. Fed’s, maniacal fanbase so he should hypothetically b least affected if ban is imposed.

I don't get it. I would expect that Tennis players would want to play tennis, no matter what.
Even recreational players can't stay away from the court anymore. I've seen people play on public courts, even though having to go under the police yellow tape (risking getting fines and whatnot).
Roger and Rafa are sotto voce pushing for further delays and Meanwhile, Novak is starting the "Adria tour".

We know its all lip service. No chance of a player skipping Roland Garros because of empty stands....
Maybe sometime we can arrange a meeting between Nadal and you.

He would be so utterly disgusted by you, it would be hilarious
