Exactly.

Musetti is a habitual foul mouth but only Italians knew his bad manners since he mumbles in that language only. So the idiot figured he could just swear like a sailor at the Chinese, and now he's shocked that his own people translated it and called him out when he hit the big leagues. Sorry, buddy, the "charming, cursing in Italian" phase was for the minors. Top ten means you're on the main stage now. Scrub mentality of "they can't understand me, so I'll just grunt obscenities" doesn't work any more at the elite level, where there are a lot more eyeballs. He can't just act like he's screaming into the void at some Podunk challenger.

His low rent mentality also explains why he keeps losing in finals and SFs — he's unfit for the top.
i couldn’t agree more - it’s not just the swearing, this goes hand in hand with his inability to win big matches.

he’s a cheap street kid inside, no matter how beautiful his tennis is. this is what his coach raised (his coach is obviously the same if not worse). this man-baby still can’t bring himself to grow up and take control of his life.

EDIT: the beauty of this is that in the following match the whole stadium coughed even more just to spite him :rotfl:

Covid and stuff aside, Chinese people smoke a lot don't they? Perhaps that could be why they cough a lot.
or maybe it’s air pollution - in Beijing specifically you need to wear a mask outdoors just to breathe on some days.

He is first of all dumb af :rotfl: knowing that these days almost everything someone says in a public event, no matter how underhand and regardless of language, might be caught by some device and put on social media in a few hours if not minutes, you gotta be super careful if anything, and it's not like it hasn't happened in other tennis matches before to not know any better.

Whatever you would like to call Musetti's outburst, I don't think racist is spot on. If you really are a racist, passionately looking down on people from some ethnic or cultural group, accusing the group of your contempt of too much coughing must be pretty far down on the list of racial slurs. Crybaby, as some have suggested, seems closer to the mark.

The biggest mistake Musetti made was apologizing. Anyone who is a public figure or works for a company with a large number of Chinese people should know that it is common sense not to apologize to the Chinese. I am living in a country without contracts(ignore my VPN). In China's 3,600-year-old culture filled with hierarchy, there is only read people carefully and pick on the weak and fear the strong. Until he apologizes, people will at least wonder if he made a serious mistake or if they will be censored by the government for criticizing a foreigner (they know that the Chinese government treats foreigners far better than its own nationals). But since his apology, a bunch of cowards who usually work 60 hours a week without overtime pay and eat cooking oil that is almost always transported in diesel tankers, but who never dare to complain about the government, have suddenly become incredibly warrior at this point, and have started to go on a rampage of insults and even curses against him. I need to emphasize that the Chinese's frenzied abuse of him started with his apology and not with his cursing on the court. John Cena is another vivid example, before his apology most Chinese watched his video and generally found it hilarious and criticized him very little. But since his apology, Chinese attitudes towards him have taken a U-turn, almost everyone I know is cursing him, his image has gone down the drain and can never be recovered. This is the same reason why the Chinese are so fond of making people apologize, because once you apologize, your status in the hierarchy goes down the tubes and is irreversible. So as a Chinese, I would advise you not to apologize to any Chinese as much as possible, because China is a hierarchical society with 0 contracts and trusts, and apologizing is much more serious than making mistakes. Everyone should learn from Paula Badosa, she indeed did racial discrimination behaviour to Chinese people in last year but she never apologized, now every Chinese people forget this(I don't agree Badosa's discrimination, I am agree with her subsequent approach)

The only time the computer said YES, the old man was caughing. Caughing out of joy.

Let them caugh.

I think it's a cultural thing.

It's my impression that for some Asians (not only Chinese, but not Japanese), it's not considered impolite or low class to make loud body noises, such a coughing, clearing the throat or slurping tea or soup.

So while Westerners would try to suppress a cough when they are among people, Asians just let it go.

I don't think it's racist to complain about that, but it's certainly pointless. If you play in Asia, you have to live with it.

this is interesting. but if he hadn’t apologised, it would have looked terrible in “the West”. Indeed it was Italians who posted those clips and made the thing viral. We are pretty mad.

Cough, sorry. I am not a native speaker.

I'm pretty sure everyone says stupid things sometimes, when we generalize. I heard one too many times "the Romanian thieves", "the gipsies", blabla. We're all getting too sensitive. I don't wanna know what Năstase would have said nowadays with all the cameras and internet spreading everything everywhere.

I do hear a lot of noises in these matches in China, I don't know if it's the Chinese cough-vid :spit:or maybe it's the way the stadiums are built, these round shapes make the acoustic better.

Anyway, move on and cough less. :rofl4:
This. I’ve said tons of stuff generalising, as has most people on here! It’s natural.

This is very interesting

So China will like Kyrgios? Because he doesn’t give a fuck and no apologies? Or Bublik?

No matter what his intention is, "those damn Chinese" sounds pretty racist to me.
he should have skipped the damn

i get the feeling china is discovering racism towards them recently and/or uttering theit feelings about it.

wonder if chinese government will paint racism aa something "western".

That isn't racist at all wtf, people nowadays are so fking soft

Prob wasn't the best choice of words in the heat of the moment, but it's clear that he was annoyed at and was referring specifically to all the people coughing, whether it's deliberate or not we don't know - if not then he's at fault cuz it's outside their control if they're sick, but this isn't racist at all

What Townsend did/said towards the Chinese & their culture was 10x worse and way more disrespectful, she should be getting a lot more hate or heat for what she did
What did Townsend do and say? I missed it.
Should she be sent back to town?

You're quite right, and this is precisely what I've been thinking about. But if the affect of this matter were confined solely to China, his actions would be utterly foolish. Chinese's anger is all too easily provoked, yet choosing to apologise would only multiply that fury tenfold. Never entertain the notion that you're apologising merely to appease someone's displeasure. It makes thing worse.
