During his first round match in Beijing, Musetti complained about people in the audience repeatedly coughing, but he did so in a way that sounded like he was blaming all Chinese people and associated the act of repeatedly coughing with being Chinese. He also mocked the act of coughing.
Even if I’m a huge fan of Musetti’s game style, I consider this extremely serious. Not even Djokovic’s worst reactions against the public (in much, much more hostile environments with like whole stadiums against him) compare to this one. I can’t recall Djokovic doing anything racist, ever.
Musetti apologised but it didn’t do much to quell the backlash and he was booed during his 2nd round match.
Personally this leaves a really bad taste in my mouth and I can’t help seeing him differently now. I’ll always love his game style, but as a person, even if I never thought he was very smart, my view of him has changed for the worse now. And I see him as someone more sinister than just “not very smart”. There’s something dark in him and he needs a really good therapist to dig it out.
Any thoughts?
