Edition #75,
Theme: "Spoken Word"
The song must contain words that are spoken.
A relatively small portion would be enough, like f.i. in this song.
Rapping to the rhythm/flow of a song doesn't count. Eligible would however be something like this.


How To Play & Main Rules

0. Anyone can participate.
1. Send me via PM a Youtube link to your song choice (by the deadline given in the thread title).
The song must follow the Theme rule (see above).

2. You can not send a song that was already selected in a previous BSG edition (please check the list in the link given in post #2 of this thread).
A different version of the same song performed by a different artist/band is allowed though.

After the nomination phase is over, the entire song list will be revealed (while keeping a secret who sent which song).

3. After listening thoroughly (and as possible repeatedly) to all songs, please vote via PM (to me) for your favorite songs.
Voting formats:

In a 'midsized' edition (with 22 to 27 songs/players), please vote for 12 songs, ranked from top (your top fav) to bottom (your 12th choice).
(Not a requirement, but it would help the manager if you already added the standardised points that will be awarded to these songs, from top to bottom like:
14, 12, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.)
In a 'Final' as well as in a 'small' edition (with 21 or fewer songs/players), please vote for 10 songs, ranked from top (your top fav) to bottom (your 10th choice).
(Not a requirement, but it would help the manager if you already added the standardised points that will be awarded to these songs, from top to bottom like:
12, 10, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.)
In a 'Semi Final' (that's held in big editions with 28 or more songs/players) please also vote for 10 songs (in each SF section), ranked from top (your top fav) to bottom (your 10th choice).
(And adding the points, the same way as in a 'Final' (12, 10, 8,...), would be nice of you.)
If your own song was eliminated at the SF stage, you are still allowed and even requested to vote in the Final.
4. You can not vote for your own song (in any case).

5. If you vote for fewer songs than required, you will receive penalty points in reversed order of the points awarded (to the songs) in the particular voting format, namely:
In a 'midsized' edition: 1 (if you vote for only 11 songs) or 2 or 3 or 4 or 5 or 6 or 7 or 8 or 9 or 10 or 12 or 14 (if you don't vote at all).
In a 'small' edition as well as in a 'Final' or in the 'Semi Final' section your own song is in: 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6 / 7 / 8 / 10 / 12.

6. The winner of the current edition earns the right to choose the theme of the next edition.
(Themes can be repeated only after 50 editions have passed since their last use (see table of past BSG winners & themes in post #2).)

7. If the same song is sent by more than one player, the manager is supposed to ask the second and further players to choose another song.

8. The manager is required to send her/his own votes to https://www.menstennisforums.com/members/96586-mww.html, not later than 48 hours before the respective voting deadline (also in semifinals), else the manager's votes will not count.

9. Tiebreak criteria (for songs tied in points after the voting):
1st = amount of sets of top points received. 2nd (if still tied) = amount of 2nd highest points received. And so on.

The ideal duration for a 'midsized' BSG edition is 20-21 days: 8 for Nominations, 12 for Voting, 1 for transition or extensions.
The manager is however free to move the dates or extend that duration quite a bit.

Late votes: It's common practice in BSG to count late votes until the actual start of the results revelation (or Ceremony).
That could make things tough for the manager though. It's alright if the manager announces (shortly) in advance that the deadline will be strict, but then really no late votes can be accepted (as situations where the manager can arbitrarily decide if a vote counts, could be abused for results manipulation).

that sounds like a clear maybe :woohoo:





...as for the theme compliance, i was now reminded that there's also this,
and in many (strictly seen, probably: most) cases is the seemingly clear speaking still quite adjusted to the rhythm actually.
possible that i'll write something back to some senders, and we can discuss things/songs also later during the game, but it's not an easy theme also for me.

I actually think one of my fav bands of all time might fit as spoken word, in a way. I'll submit shortly to see if the manager thinks it meets the criteria.

or not. maybe it's not so attractive in your part of the world, but i've rediscovered quite something just by zapping through some my playlists this weekend. (i had never listened to them through that same lens before. :cool:)

I kinda found already 5-6 good songs with spoken words but none of them really suit my taste and style.

I wonder if part from 2:12 to 2:40 would be considered spoken word?

the boundaries are fluid, what can i say. :shrug:

even in the strong examples of speaking in BSG history (such as Good Morning Captain, The Black Plaque, Constantine, Atlantis) the speaking is not totally disconnected from the rhythm.

extended parts of speaking will already feature moments that should qualify without a doubt
and short parts such as in Adieu-au-dancefloor are essentially too short to adjust to the beat/rhythm.

if you think of a tennis ball, that might not be big enough. i don't know much about him really, but some of my friends told me that he isn't actually human but some sort of extraterrestrial reptilian species or so, and would just swallow such a small ball and continue.

btw, it reminds me of this song, that was submitted by a certain @afterglows once and might fit the theme well. as this is never singing ya can't fool meeeh.

for Argentina it should be somewhat easier already...

In my opinion, it's good. He's saying that part of the lyrics as one would recite a poem. Adjusting diction to fit the music is hardly something that could be held against it in terms of theme compliance imo.

That being said, my own example of Wu-tang's "chamber music" is not so good, even if theme boss JMG approved it. I would value "spoken word" more if it's part of the song itself and done by musicians/singers than a (movie) sample mixed in intro part, which is actually quite common and easy to find.

I love that whole album. Don't know if it's spoken word tho. Singer is trying to vocalize lyrics extremely flat, presumably to sound like a robot I guess? I'm kind of leaning towards "no', in similar way that rapping is not spoken word, but I'm not sure.

the speaking is greatly adjusted to the bar, but with smaller parts (such as in AdieuAuDancefloor) it can be very similar, just less obvious.
so imo this would be a solid entry.

for some reasons he wanted to set just that small handicap: the song shall contain spoken word. :shrug:

he's definitely still half-singing there.
i could reject such a case, but another manager would let it pass just like that,
and the latest BSG policy (that i support) has anyway been that the manager isn't required anymore to control the entries so closely.

but if i have the time, i'll bring the topic of the theme compliance of the playlist entries up during the voting phase, also to get some good discussion. that may not or may not influence the voting then. :smoke:
