PHH doing his best to shed that 'doubles specialist' tag :tennis:

Tough luck for Shapo - the result looks close so presumably he went down fighting... From previous comments, seems like his serving woes have subsided so it's probably time for his team to target other areas of game for improvement.

Denis didn't serve well in the first set, but credit to him for getting it together and serving/playing very well in the second. Strange shot gave Herbert a match point. Denis went for a drop shot when he had the whole right side to hit down the line. Ah well - it's easy when you don't have to do the work, like me. He'll get there!

In a match like this Shapovalov needed to focus on keeping the ball in play. But that was a big ask, given he barely managed to get it over the net during return games. His RoS is really a saturated topic. Not much left to say here. As the time passed, his failing to handle his opponent's serve frustrated him more and more and errors started piling up. Won't take anything away from PHH. He played with much conviction and managed to dictate his own terms. A textbook match for Denis to learn from.

P2H is damn serious about getting better in singles. Santoro doing wonders already in short time.

Herbert continues his dominance over long backswing guys (mostly on indoor courts).
Shapovalov's should develop chip return like other OHBH players, otherwise his return game won't improve. It's just too hit and miss.
Chip and block returns, I totally agree. Herbert played exceptionally well today. And Denis made a few too many errors.

The more and more I watch Denis, the more I think his best results are going to come on slower surfaces. They help his poor return game and he likes having time on the ball on both wings.

Interesting thought. His return game can obviously improve a lot, and considering his age I think it will. He has yet to prove many things, but there is no real barrier. At the moment he likes to dictate, and he suffers when he can't. But he will learn.
I think his current standard - where he really likes to set up shots and go for them - will be tempered to include more tactical play. Including not going for the full swing quite so often.
