And to think, for some reason, there was a pretty good poster here who proclaimed Monfils would likely be retiring this year (maybe Rumour?).

Monfils average shot weight was just heavier and better than Goffin's. That along with the superior ground stroke stability, didn't give Pospisil the opportunities to attack.

Of course Monfils' serving and court coverage couldn't be overlooked either.

Great week for both.

P.S: It's odd how often Pospisil falls down, not even stumbling, just falling down.

Nice match, Pospisil wasted too many break chances in the second set and Monfils was pretty clutch. This is the first time Monfils wins two finals in a row, improves his final win percentage to 30% (9-21):p

Really nice match by Monfils, he has been playing solid tennis this year (except that match vs Thiem). Gael was unusually clutch in last 2 matches and played his best tennis on important points.
Eventually his returning and retrieval skills were too much for Vasek and result was logical.

Now Gael has to defend 500 points in Rotterdam, which will be very tough to do, but at least this win will help him, even if he loses in QF/SF there.

Monfils' finals record is gradually improving. It's now 9 wins and 21 losses. It has been a while since it reached the 30% win rate mark.
33 and still going strong. With his style of play and injury issues, how many people really thought he'll be playing and be in the top 10 at this age.

Kudos to Popsisil, he had a few breakpoints in the the second set but couldn't get it done. He's now 0-6 against Monfils but he's having a nice comeback. As long as plays on fast surfaces, he'll be grand.

Monfils was just too good here. Appears the finals struggles in his career are firmly behind him.

I just hope whatever Vasek took his MTO for isn't too serious. He's finally getting things back on track and certainly doesn't need a setback.

Posp played some lovely S and V 1rst set but he ran out of gas and couldn't hang with Gael in the long rallies.
Still a great result for Posp and it's obvious he needs to improve his conditioning now.

Anyone notice him swigging maple syrup? LOL Never saw that before. Very Canadian, very tasty.

I like this version of monfils, some power behind the strokes and serve with great placement. I am not sure why he goes into that passive mode like the Australian Open (Gulbis, Thiem).

I thought 9 titles sounded awfully low for Monfils considering how long he's been around but 21 losses in the final makes sense of it.

Monfils often looks very good against lesser player from the baseline, magically disappear against superior players.

That’s pretty much cause higher ranked players know how to control the points against him without going for too much and in the end Monfils isn’t able to do anything to them other than a run of slapping winners that lasts for about half a set. Djokovic is the perfect example of this.

Monfils and Zverev (in form) have such general rally shot weight without exerting any energy into their shot, depth and court coverage behind their serving that it pretty much clears for almost all players outside the top 20 without being too extra.

After that, you reach some ceilings, road bumps.

Good comparison, although i think Zverev can reach greater heights.. He should always win against players he is supposed to indeed.
