Guga just beat Bastl, 7-5 7-6 (7)
Tough match, probably long one, so its good to give him rhythm of play, especially considering its on hard courts.
Next on, Martin Lee (GBR)

Kuerten Conquers Bastl

Brazilian makes a successful comeback to the U.S. hard courts, as Grosjean and Malisse both progress.

Gustavo Kuerten moved through to the second round of the Mercedes-Benz Cup in Los Angeles after defeating Swiss qualifier George Bastl 7-5, 7-6(7) on Tuesday.

Kuerten, a semifinalist at the UCLA Tennis Center last year, was making his first appearance on hard courts since the Australian Open in January. And the Brazilian, who last played in the U.S. at Flushing Meadows, was happy to be back on American soil.

"It was my first match on hard courts and I played well," said Kuerten, who fired 10 aces and was never broken in the 1-hour, 41-minute match. "It's a little different than clay and the real test is playing matches. I wished I played more matches in Stuttgart last week but I played two matches in one day and it was a little too much."

Happy

Kuerten, the No. 5 seed, saved two set points in the second set and closed the match with a serve and volley winner. "I'm just happy to win in straight sets," said the Brazilian. "I like to play this tournament and I like the conditions. The courts aren't too fast."

Guga´s official site is not helping either... They are still announcing that he plays his first match on Tuesday. DOH!
Anyway, he will play Martin Lee tomorrow, so it´s good to give him one more day to work on his physicall rehabilitation. A lot better than playing two matches in one day. ;)
