MC R2: Monfils def. Karlovic 7-6(8), 6-1

kinda sad lol

6-1 set against karlovic proves how useless a big serve is on clay...

Gael could have TB easier and also could have lost it (Ivo had a SP).
Very easy second set.
Karlovic served 0 ace !

Good stuff Monfils, some moments where he was in San Remo trying to return the ball, but off the Karlovic serve that's understandable.

Third round for Monfils is a lot further than many expected this week, showed some of his panther like speed at times.

Weird tie-break. Monfils was 3:0 up and played amateurish tennis, then was *4:1, 5:2, 6:5, *7:6 - Ivo saved setpoint after amazingly long rally for his standars and moment later wasted SP on his own serve

Ivo's tie-breaks '08 = :help:

It's great to see Gael winning again in an important tournament.
Maybe he's got a small shot at Fed next, assuming Fed beats Hidalgo...

Did it ever happen ?
Karlovic once served 0 aces vs. return king Querrey, if I remember correctly.

EDIT: not correct. But I think it happenned last season around the time he played Querrey in Memphis.

Yay
Didn't watch this match but not too surprised at the outcome - only disappointed now that it seems I won't see him play Federer next...

According to an article on the official tournament site:

Frenchman Gael Monfils did not concede one ace against 6' 10'' Ivo Karlovic in a 7-6(8), 6-1 win over the Croatian. It was the first time in Karlovic's 225-match ATP career that he had failed to serve an ace in a match.

Monfils, who has not won a tournament since his first ATP title in Sopot almost three years ago, had won just two matches this season before arriving in Monte Carlo.

Monfils said: "I was stressed about Karlovic's game because I wanted to make him play as many balls as possible because I know he's not so good at that. But thinking about that stressed me, and I played too short."

Monfils said he played better when he decided to become more aggressive. "I wanted to take risks and I wanted to take advantage of some of his weaknesses."

At this point int time it would behoove Monfils to be like a James Blake, play high risk tennis all the time. As hard as he hits, with that style, he'd climb in the top 20 in no time.
