I remember one year when the King was in poor form and somehow qualified for RG, he gave Simon a huge hiding.

Yes, he was really hurt according to the reports and the pics I've seen:

He usually doesn't retire like that.

And in an interview before the match, he said his back problems had reappeared in training in MC, so it probably didn't help today.
Now he also is in poor form and prone to mental collapses, I'm not saying it's the only reason for this embarrassing result.
