I would agree with you 100/100 times but in this case, Dolgo is supposedly injured and as you say, this clay surface and altitude suits his game quite well. I think he can qualify, but probably playing at Sarasota would have been a better choice. I don't think he wants to play challengers, probably sees that as a last resort, but the opportunity for match practice and more points for winning the event would have been nice, and obviously as much match toughness and practice for grass is needed. Hopefully this decision doesn't backfire on him.I think he will have a hard time beating Dolgopolov on clay, except that Madrid has some altitude. Anyway, good to see him back and attempting to qualify for the master, but I wonder if playing some challengers in the US an getting match tough for the grass season would've been better....
