Hope all our Chilean friends out there are ok. :awww:
SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) -- A major earthquake rocked a large area of northern Chile on Wednesday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The quake was felt strongly in the capital, Santiago. The U.S. Geological Survey calculated the quake's magnitude at 7.7.
It struck at 10:40 ET a.m. and was centered 780 miles (1,260 kilometers) north of Santiago, or 25 miles (40 kilometers) east-southeast of Tocopilla, Chile, the USGS said.
The USGS said it occurred 38 miles (61 kilometers) beneath the surface.
"It was horribly strong. It was very long and there was a lot of underground noise," said Andrea Riveros, spokeswoman for Park hotel in Calama, 60 miles (100 kilometers) east-southeast of the quake's center.
She said the quake knocked out power to the hotel, but caused no damage. She said she did not know what had happened in town.
