Hope all our Chilean friends out there are ok. :awww: :wavey:

SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) -- A major earthquake rocked a large area of northern Chile on Wednesday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake was felt strongly in the capital, Santiago. The U.S. Geological Survey calculated the quake's magnitude at 7.7.

It struck at 10:40 ET a.m. and was centered 780 miles (1,260 kilometers) north of Santiago, or 25 miles (40 kilometers) east-southeast of Tocopilla, Chile, the USGS said.

The USGS said it occurred 38 miles (61 kilometers) beneath the surface.

"It was horribly strong. It was very long and there was a lot of underground noise," said Andrea Riveros, spokeswoman for Park hotel in Calama, 60 miles (100 kilometers) east-southeast of the quake's center.

She said the quake knocked out power to the hotel, but caused no damage. She said she did not know what had happened in town.

I live in the "little" north, here the quake didn't produced a big effect, but in the "big" north, in cities like Arica, Antofagasta, Iquique and Calama... :scared::awww: I hope PoderShileno (he lives in Arica), josemalito (not a big poster but he lives in Copiapó) are okay, :awww:.

not many people live in the atacama desert. everyone should be ok.
That's right ;). but sadly the quake's power affected huge population zones, like Antofagasta [300.000+], Calama [120.000+] and many little towns which exist since the "Saltpeter fever".

Besides the epicenter wasn't in the high mountain, actually it was 70 kms far the sea, where the highway 5 is at.

...been working up towards an International Development/Resource Aid Agency...

...and I lived through the 6.7 quake in Southern California. (1973?---)

I know that seismic activity can set reservoirs to rocking, and breaking. ...I don't know the development of television in Northern Chile, but I imagine that cell phones are ubiquitious. --If there were widespread damage in the other populous areas in the North, we won't have long, in this internet age, to find out.

Then again, guys...not to be insensitive, but...you play a world sport.

Gotta "go with the flow."

Gotta "roll with the punches..."

Gotta...live the life. Love to live...live life while others are suffering...

I'm in trouble, right?

Here's a little 'mellow' for you, from Al Stewart.
