The Big 3 have had a career of FOUR slams playing to their likeability. Slow and Medium surfaces. Sampras on 4 fast surfaces for slams? Forget it. Those 14 slams would have very easily been 30 slams
Of course they were also all in direct conflict with each other for their slams and still all have at least 3 more than Pete.Sampras had three slams per season, as Federer and Djokovic also had, because RG was Nadal's.
If Federer and Djokovic had skipped clay court season as Sampras had taking it as a nice training session before Wimb., they would've won more slams.
... And in that sole Semi-final appearance Sampras had to go through baptism & fire just to make it there.... Beating Bruguera in 5 sets in the 2nd round and then Todd Martin also in 5 in the 3rd round... Courier then should've put him out of his misery in the Quarters but blew a 2 sets to 0 lead.Sampras outdid himself that tournament.Agassi, won all four.
Borg - 4 USO Finals
McEnroe - French Final
Lendl - Wimbledon Final
Edberg - French Final
Connors - French Semifinals. 0/4. Got within a set of Gerulaitis in 1980.
Becker - French Semifinals. 0/3 lost to Edberg in 5.
Sampras - French Semifinals. 0/1 never won a set.
Sampras is much closer to Wilander than he is to Connors/Becker, let alone the top 8. If you're arguing surface flexibility, Sampras isn't in the top 10.
