Hewitt just lost in the first round of Brisbane which put him down to 84 in the rankings. Brisbane was his first match since the US Open. The only tournament on his upcoming schedule is the Aussie and then Davis Cup first round. All this is adding up to make me believe that after the first round of Davis Cup, we will no longer be privileged to watch Lleyton play our game again. What are your thoughts?

Lley-Lley is playing an exhibition match with Berdy in Adelaide next week
I'd say that further makes me think the end is near, if he's doing exhibitions rather than playing 250s to try to pick up points and get his ranking high enough to get direct entry into the big non-grand slam tournaments.

He's also playing an exho with Fed next Monday in Sydney.

But that's pretty much what he did last year by way of prep, viz Brisbane (albeit rather more matches!) plus Kooyong.

Lots of signs he is thinking about it (like joining that ATP retired players advisory group!) but seems fixated on one last crack at DC. Alas, probably too soon for Oz rising stars and the best team Australia could field at the moment probably doesn't include him in any case...

I was under impression Lleyton would stop after AO this year. It was reported last year

Surprisingly there hasn't been any speculation in the media.
Yes they've been amazingly kind to him in the coverage of his loss (perhaps a tad sexist compared to the drubbing Stosur got for hers?!).

Mind you best response was surely GSC's John Morris:

Good job tonight @SamGrothTennis but remind me to never invite you to a party!! #PartyPooper #GrothKilledBambisMum Keep it up mate.
But maybe they got it out of the system last year when the line was he probably would stay in until Oz (in all probability) loses to Czech Republic in DC in first tie: http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/t...t-czech-republic/story-fnibcgxs-1227063583711

Hewitt is a heavily declined former world #1 who lost to a fellow Australian who is a bad match up for him.
Stosur is a chronic underachiever who managed to choke a 5-1 lead in the third on home soil.

Common on, she too is a former singles Slam winner, won a slam last year (albeit in mixed doubles) and former no 4 in singles; no 1 in doubles. And she is still ranked 22.

True a constant choker and underachiever but she is still winning serious comps and didn't talk up how well she was going to do this summer nearly as much as Hewitt.

Hewitt by contrast hasn't been anywhere near even the top 30 for five years now yet only a week ago was in the media saying he could defend his title and do a deep run, even win the AO!

I wonder what is up with Lleyton. Sure he had a shoulder injury last year but he recently said he had a good preparartion with "first class practice sets" and his body would feel fine. When watched him in Brisbane his body looks better than in a long time before. He played great at AO 2012 despite being hardly able to walk due to foot injury. At the end of 2013 and the beginning of 2014 it looked like he would be able to return to the top 20 again with wins over Wawrinka,Federer,Nishikori, Del Potro,... and then only early exits until now, It seems like he forgot how to hit a ball to win matches.
So what's going wrong?

I thought he retired a few years ago?

He'll surely retire after this upcoming Aussie Open or the Davis Cup matches

get the grand exit his career has deserved.
