Hi guys,

I don't know much about tennis so I wouldn't normally find myself here, but I've got a questionairre back for a research job I'm applying for and three of the questions are tennis related!

So if you could answer any of these with a bit of reasoning too then that would be a big help to point me in the right direction....

1) Which player do you think is most likely to score the highest number of aces in the 2012 Australian Open?

2) Which player do you think is most likely to score the highest number of aces in a single match at the 2012 Australian open?

3) Out of Novak Djokovic, Tomas Berdych and Feliciano Lopez, which player do you expect to serve the most aces in the tournament?

I've looked at some stats and have some ideas but, like I say, I don't really know that much about tennis so any thoughts you have would be great. Thanks :worship:

During a single match, probably Karlovic... He's always the number 1 candidate for that. Next to him Isner.

And during the whole tournament, I don't think Karlovic to score so many aces because he will be out of the tournament soon, I'd say Isner. Raonic is another good candidate.

And the 3rd question, obviusly Feli Lopez, Djokovic and Berdych aren't good servers.

Regarding your second point would you say Tsonga's got a good shot at most serves in the tournament as a whole too? From what I've read he generally does well in the AO, and he's not a bad server is he?

I'd go with Nadal. His lefty slider out wide usually generates an ace, and when he goes up the middle he surprises the other player and therefore, the end result also is an ace most of the time. He also has one of the highest 1st serve %, around 70%. Add the fact that he'll go far, semi's or final at least, and he's your top candidate.

LoL why can't I find a job related to tennis?

1) Isner, he unlike Karlovic is seeded and will likely advance to the 4 th round. So I think he is a safe bet.

2) Again I'm going with Isner. Karlovic may end up playing against a top guy in the first round while Isner will get some mug. Tsonga is good but he will problaby use his serve in a tactical way in the 2 week rather than go for aces. Raonic is also a good alternative.

3) Very, very hard one. Berdych is out of the question since he normaly has a low percentage of first serves in. Lopez can hit up to 20+ aces per match but he's going to be out somewhere in the 3rd or 4 th round and Djokovic is likely to go all the way to the final but dosen't have such a hot serve.

Just to sum it up, Raonic had the most aces at 94 and he played 4 matches. Underneath him were Roddick and Isner who played 4 and 3 matches respectively but they only had around 75 aces.

As far as Djokovic, Berdych and Lopez, Lopez is by far the most productive in that group. According to last year's stats, he had 37 aces and he only played 2 matches. Berdych on the other hand had 38 aces which came from 5 matches while Djokovic had 51 aces in 7 matches. So as alter ego pointed out, while Lopez will rack up the most in one match, he may be poor to choose for an entire tournament as he doesn't normally get into the 2nd week. Similarly, Karlovic served 48 aces in his only match, albeit a five set match against Dodig.

As far as Tsonga, he didn't play a great Australian Open last year, and only gathered a total of 37 aces in his 3 matches even though 2 of his matches went to 5.

But yeah, I think last year's statistics will be the perfect indicator as virtually all those players except for Lopez and Berdych have been on the up while those two are pretty questionable.

My predictions?

Raonic will get the most aces in the tournament
Karlovic will be the most aces in a match
Djokovic will get the most aces out of those 3 players
Tsonga will not be in the top 5 of the ace count at the end

Did you not read the stat? He only need 4 rounds and he was 20+ over Roddick who had the 2nd most aces.

Sorry to be a bit simple, but how many rounds are we looking at from start to finish?

And also, do the big guns start off at the same round as the non-seeded players, or do they come in at a later round?

We are looking at seven rounds. Everyone plays the same number of rounds as far as the stats are concerned.

I need to submit it before the draw unfortunately, but there looks to be a reasonable consensus here for the most likely one or two for each question so that's a big help.

Isner and Karlovic are the most probable to serve the most aces in a match
In the tournament... well if Karlovic doesn't even pass the 1st or 2nd round it's impossible to be him so Isner or Tsonga
Isner has a better serve but maybe Tsonga will go deeper in the tournament... it depends on the draw
Isner showed us at the USO he is capable of reaching a QF at a GS and if he will reach at least the 4th round at the AO, I think he will be the one to serve the most aces in the tournament

Karlovic is a huge favorite for aces in 1 match, he usually racks up a lot of aces in his matches, like his 48 in his only match there last year. He might not get a lot if he draws a top seed though. If not Karlovic then Isner or Raonic

As for most in 1 tournament it'll probably be Raonic or Isner, whichever goes farther. They usually average similar numbers of aces per match so it will probably come down to number of matches played for them. Based on his seeding Raonic will be expected to make the 3rd round as a 17-32 seed. I'm not sure about Isner, he's very close to the border to get a top 16 seed to maybe make round 4. Raonic is playing well in Chennai atm though so he may cause an upset or 2. It`s really close between those 2. Roddick will rack up a few too assuming he stays alive long enough, but he's declining now.

As for Djokovic, Berdych, Lopez. Lopez is by far the better server but likely will last only 3-4 rounds. That could be enough to surpass Djokovic as he was only 14 behind Djokovic in only 2 matches last year. I wouldn't choose Berdych, he's an ok server, but not the kind that racks up loads of aces, and he won't last until the final. Djokovic will likely make the final so will have 7 matches to get aces, but again, he doesn't rack up a lot of them, I would say it all depends on how far Lopez gets, if he gets as far as round 4 I think he'll beat Nole in aces, if not it'll be Nole. I'm gonna say that it'll be Lopez, he's pretty close to a top 16 seed which would see him into round 4 if things go as expected

3rd one is very tough.... Very close between all 3. Djokovic and Berdych should go further than Lopez, but Lopez is much better server. Djokovic will probably go the furthest, so I'd avoid Berdych, but Lopez might be worth a try

Sorry, I'm not trying to be rude but, if this is a research position you're applying for (and this is how they narrow down the candidates) shouldn't you be trying to find the information out yourself?

The serving stats for previous tournaments & player profiles are readily available online if you look.
